About the Item
This exuberantly carved display case is a magnificent example of a 19th-century French or Italian Renaissance Revival cabinet. This type of piece was especially popular during the Victorian era, inspired by the art and architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. The overall structure, with its use of columns, pilasters, and a pediment-like top, mimics classical architecture. The upper portion features a pair of glass doors opening onto three wood shelves. The bottom functions as a separate cabinet with a drop-front door.
Among the beautifully carved figures adorning the piece, the bold lion heads at the base are a common motif in both Renaissance and Renaissance Revival furniture, symbolizing power and protection. The bearded, mustachioed, toga-wrapped figures supporting the top section are often referred to as "atlas" figures, referencing the Greek titan Atlas, who was condemned to hold up the sky for eternity. The additional elaborate carvings of acanthus leaves, fruits, foliage, and masks on the cornice and lower panel underscore the period's focus on abundant and detailed ornamentation.
