Attributed to Christian Meyer - Empire display case, Saint Petersburg, 1810s. Made of mahogany. Provenance: A city palace in St. Petersburg. Conical square feet, straight frame. Lateral pilaster strips with rhombuses, cannelurs, medallions and brass applications. Panelled doors with glazing in the upper third. Very rich and finely crafted brass applications: the doors each have star motifs. Head with profiled and projecting cornice, crown and surrounding decorative gallery. Rare furniture of best museum quality. This display case is attributed to Christian Meyer (circa 1750-1807), a German-born cabinet maker, ebenist and imperial master carpenter, who worked in St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire. Meyer was a pupil of Abraham Roentgen (1711-1793), the founder of the world-famous Roentgen furniture manufactory and one of the best cabinet makers of all time. Under Catherine the Great and her son, Paul I of Russia, St Petersburg was the centre of Russian art, culture and politics. Christian Meyer was the undisputedly most important cabinet maker of his time in St. Petersburg and created furniture of the finest quality for the imperial court and the Russian and international aristocracy. His talent and reputation allowed him to teach children of the Russian nobility the art of carpentry. With reference to the influential French master cabinetmaker Georges Jacob (1739-1814), Christian Meyer's style is labelled the "Russian Jacob style". His works are characterised by his pronounced understanding of architecture, a style associated with classicism and the unusually rich and pronounced use of applied brass ornaments. Currently, the item is in its original condition. The Empire display case will be completely restored and hand polished with antique wax or hand polished with shellac in satin matte or high gloss, preserving the patina.
