About the Item

This large French Louis XVI gilt bronze-mounted malachite vitrine cabinet features a serpentine form with glass-paneled display compartments and a bombé lower body, raised on four slender cabriole legs. The structure is veneered in Russian malachite, a semi-precious stone known for its rich green hues and irregular black banding. The top is surmounted by a scrolling gilt bronze crest of acanthus leaves and floral motifs, while the front and sides are fitted with shaped glass panels framed by ormolu moldings. The interior is lined with cream damask fabric and fitted with a single display shelf. The curved apron and legs are outlined with ormolu mounts cast in symmetrical foliate patterns, with each corner accentuated by additional gilt bronze ornaments terminating in acanthus-form sabots. Malachite, a hydrous copper carbonate, is one of the most distinctive and visually striking ornamental stones. Its vivid green coloration, silky luster, and natural banded pattern have made it a prized material for decorative art since antiquity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Russian malachite became especially sought after by European nobility and royalty. The Russian Czars and aristocracy employed it extensively to decorate palace interiors, tabletops, vases, and furniture. The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg today holds one of the most significant collections of malachite works, including monumental columns and decorative furnishings that exemplify the stone’s prominence in imperial art and design. The malachite used for this vitrine exhibits the deep concentric banding and variegated patterns associated with deposits from the Ural Mountains, known for producing the highest quality specimens used in luxury furniture making. The gilt bronze mounts are finely chiseled and cast with precision, framing each malachite panel and emphasizing the cabinet’s flowing Louis XVI silhouette. The ormolu retains its bright gilded finish and crisp definition, particularly visible in the scrolling acanthus details and floral rosettes along the frame. The cabinet’s harmonious composition and luxurious materials typify the refined French furniture of the period, where the integration of precious materials with intricate mounts represented both technical skill and aesthetic refinement. A comparable example, a Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted malachite-veneered vitrine-on-stand, with a 19th-century carcass and mounts and 20th-century malachite veneer, was sold at Christie’s, New York, in 2004 for 45,410 USD (Auction: 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics). That example shares similar proportions and construction, demonstrating the enduring appeal of French furniture veneered with Russian malachite and mounted with gilt bronze of the highest quality. This present vitrine stands as a distinguished representation of French decorative craftsmanship enriched by materials historically reserved for royal interiors.
