About the Item

This impressive Louis XV period armoire Lyonnaise was carved in Lyon, France circa 1760. Built of solid walnut, the tall and elegant cabinet stands on "pieds escargot", or escargot feet, over a shaped and scalloped apron; it is crowned at the top with a beautifully arched bonnet cornice. The central crest features a pierced cartouche depicting intertwined laurel wreaths surrounded by finely carved floral and foliate motifs, a hallmark of Lyonnais craftsmanship from the mid-18th century. The two arched doors showcase raised, molded panels with flowing asymmetrical carvings of foliage and floral sprays, opening to reveal a spacious interior now fitted with adjustable shelving and a center divider, ideal for modern storage or use as a TV cabinet. The interior is lined with red striped fabric, providing a refined contrast to the rich tones of the exterior. The armoire retains its original large iron lock mechanism with massive key, as well as the traditional crémaillère locking rod on the secondary door. With its deep walnut-brown patina, graceful curves, and sculptural details, this antique armoire exudes the warmth and grandeur of French provincial artistry. It remains in very good condition commensurate with age and use, with light warping on the lower right door corner consistent with its 18th-century origin. Measures: 70.25″ W × 28″ D × 104″ H
