About the Item

This exceptional antique fruitwood armoire, known as an Armoire Provençale, was crafted in southern France circa 1760 and exemplifies the refined rustic elegance of 18th century Provençal cabinetry. Built of solid walnut, the tall cabinet stands on classic escargot feet carved with acanthus leaves at the shoulders, rising over a scalloped and pierced apron centered with a finely carved woven floral basket flanked by laurel and wheat motifs symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The gracefully shaped bonnet top is richly carved with a neoclassical urn framed by a laurel wreath at the pediment, a sophisticated decorative feature rarely seen in Provence furniture of this quality. The double doors are adorned with hand carved floral sprays and branching motifs set within molded panels, displaying balanced symmetry and confident artisan workmanship throughout. The interior retains its original configuration, featuring full-height shelving and a fitted set of drawers, making the piece both highly functional and versatile. The armoire is fitted with its original lock, key, crémaillère, and heavy forged iron hardware, all beautifully preserved and consistent with the period. This museum-quality antique cabinet can serve equally well as an elegant storage armoire, a blanket cabinet, or an entertainment center accommodating a television up to approximately 60 inches. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and is finished in a warm, rich walnut patina that highlights the depth and character of the fruitwood grain.
