About the Item

Small antique Biedermeier Cabinet Southern Germany Walnut Biedermeier circa 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 179 x 111 x 50 cm Description: Two-door piece of furniture standing on block feet in a strictly cubist design. The neatly laid walnut burl pattern is just as typical of the period as the ebonised and thus strongly contrasting coloured components on the base, cornice and door. The attached video clearly shows the strong fiddleback figure of the wood. By the term "fiddleback figure" we mean the wave-like structure that runs across the grain, changes colour and gives the wood a very special character. This wavy texture is the result of the fact that the wood has not grown completely straight in the trunk, but slightly undulating. The changing inclination of the wood fibres and the refraction of light on the differently inclined cell structures creates a lively reflection pattern that changes depending on the incidence of light. Inside the cupboard, there is still the old hook rail that was used to hang up items of clothing. A compartmentalisation on the right-hand side was added during an older restoration and presumably adapted exactly to the needs of the previous owner. If desired, we could fit additional shelves or a clothes rail in the large open compartment on the left. A large, handleless drawer is concealed above the two doors in the relatively high cornice. Condition: Refurbished condition with a shellac hand polish.
