About the Item

A superb quality and impressive Irish early Victorian flame mahogany breakfront gentleman’s wardrobe by Robert Strahan Co of Dublin. Made with exceptional quality timbers it has an ogee shaped cornice and bead reel moulded frieze highlighted by stunning flame figuring, the rounded fielded panelled doors opening to reveal a central section with two original sliding trays above four short over three long graduating drawers with ormolu handles, two of the short drawers with dividers and removable butler’s accoutrement boxes, the side doors fitted with knob handles and enclosing full length hanging spaces with original hanging pegs and deep drawer to one side, and shelf shoe board to the other, hanging rails have also been added for convenience, with ‘Horne patent’ hinges and brass locks with keys and all raised on a plinth base. Stamped ‘STRAHAN 5528’ to the interior and exterior and with further paper trade labels. It is likely that this fabulous wardrobe was commissioned for one of Irelands large country houses. In good condition, with a rich colour and patina, some marks and signs of wear as should be expected for the age. The furniture firm of Robert Strahan Co. was founded in Dublin in 1776 and by 1845 they had two workshops as well as their main commercial premises. Known for their high quality work, the firm exhibited at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition in 1853 and the London International Exhibition in 1862. They supplied furniture to many of the most well-known Irish country houses including Doneraile Court, Lisnavagh, and Monte Alverno, many of which had their contents sold off in the 20th century. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 104 1/4in (265cm) Depth - 28 1/8in (71.5cm) Height - 87 1/2in (222.5cm) The internal sizes are approximately: Top centre section - 46in wide x 21 3/4in deep x 26in high (117cm x 55.5cm x 66cm) Side sections - 22in wide x 18 7/8in deep x 57 1/2in high (56cm x 48cm x 146cm) For moving this item divides into five sections which should be screwed together when rebuilding (cornice, plinth, two side sections, centre section).
