About the Item

This exceptional Bauhaus cabinet, produced circa 1935 by the esteemed Czechoslovak manufacturer Robert Slezák, represents a highly collectible example of interwar European Modernism and early tubular steel furniture design. Executed in the spirit of Bauhaus Functionalism, the cabinet reflects the distinctive Czechoslovak interpretation of modern design—where architectural clarity meets a refined yet expressive use of color. The lacquered wooden body is elevated on an elegantly curved tubular steel base, illustrating the era’s groundbreaking fusion of artisanal woodworking with industrial materials. Robert Slezák, headquartered in Bystrice pod Hostýnem, was among the most important Central European producers of modern steel furniture during the 1930s. Through close collaboration with Thonet-Mundus AG, Slezák held licenses for designs associated with leading modernists including Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam, Mies van der Rohe, and Bruno Weil. These international connections positioned the company at the forefront of European Modernism and contributed to its lasting design legacy. The cabinet preserves its original salmon-toned spirit lacquer finish, an authentic period surface rarely found in comparable condition. Softly rounded corners, cylindrical metal handles, and the precise tubular steel construction emphasize the disciplined, architectural design language characteristic of Bauhaus furniture from this period. A museum-quality original with strong provenance, this cabinet stands as a compelling document of Bauhaus influence beyond Germany and an outstanding example of color-driven Functionalism from pre-war Czechoslovakia. Its originality, condition, and expressive yet restrained color make it particularly attractive to serious collectors of Bauhaus and Modernist design.
