Armoire with inlays Southwest Germany Walnut, beginning of the 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D 210 cm x 156 cm x 49 cm Description: Solid walnut body standing on ball feet. Beveled pilaster strips with flowers inlaid in maple in cartouche. Frame-mounted doors suspended on fittings hinges. Door panels on the outside with carved finish. Rarely beautifully carved ornamental strip in the middle door hinge. Fillings inlaid with pretzels held by two lions in the upper door fillings and flower inlays in the lower fillings. This so-called splitting cabinet is divisible in the middle. Very typical for the epoche and the area of Southwest Germany. Condition: Ready to live, restored condition. Surface waxed. To all our furniture you will receive a perfect and extensive expertise. Comparable objects can be found in the literature: Wolfgang L. Eller - Möbel des Klassizismus, Louis XVI und Empire p. 163-165 Some information about Walnut: Walnut was and is probably the most popular European precious wood for antique furniture of all epochs. In contrast to cherry or oakwood, which were out of fashion from time to time, walnut wood was always popular and we find it especially on antiques from the Baroque, Louis XVI, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau periods. The beautiful grain lends itself to mirrored veneer images. South German and Austrian Biedermeier furniture is often veneered with walnut on softwood. In Baroque and Louis XVI furniture we find walnut in combination with lighter woods such as maple or ash. Due to the fine pores of the wood, it is perfectly suited for shellac polishes. The structure of walnut wood ranges from simple straight lines to wild and lively. Also the color is absolutely interesting and can go from light reddish to dark brown even within one trunk. In Central and Southern Europe walnut was used both as solid wood and as veneer. Due to its good workability and beautiful wood structure, walnut is still one of the most popular woods in furniture and interior design. The walnut wood used in the time of origin of our furniture came from the respective region of origin of the furniture.
