About the Item

Walnut and Solnhofen slate (Austria) Vienna, circa 1820 Height 84 cm, width 39 cm, depth 39 cm Column-shaped nightstand or cabinet made of walnut with a circular top in Solnhofen slate. The piece has a cylindrical structure resting on an octagonal base and crowned by a thin perimeter fillet. It incorporates an upper drawer and a hinged door that opens onto a compartmentalized interior with a shelf. The walnut veneer displays a symmetrical grain pattern, carefully selected and arranged in a mirror image, which accentuates the sculptural character of the piece. The light-colored Solnhofen slate with its polished surface offers a delicate contrast to the warmth of the walnut, as well as a surface that is resistant to everyday wear and tear. This type of stone, highly prized in early 19th-century Austrian cabinetmaking, was frequently used in bedroom furniture due to its durability and natural matte texture. The piece retains its original lock and the discreet hardware characteristic of high-quality Viennese production. This cabinet is an excellent example of early Viennese Biedermeier, a style that emerged after the Napoleonic Wars as a reaction to imperial ostentation, proposing a new domestic aesthetic based on formal clarity, the nobility of wood, and architectural purity. Its volumetric sobriety, balanced proportions, and prominent grain place it within the most refined repertoire of Viennese urban cabinetmaking around 1820, where simplicity became synonymous with elegance.
