About the Item

This rare and exceptionally well-preserved Bauhaus wardrobe was designed by architect and furniture designer John Hageman for Thonet-Mundus and produced in the company’s renowned Frankenberg workshops around 1930. Hageman is best known as the construction manager of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat, one of the most iconic achievements of modernist architecture. His work for Thonet translates this same architectural rigor into furniture, combining clarity, precision, and material refinement in a way few designers of the time achieved. A Bauhaus Masterpiece in Rare Luxury Mahogany Unlike the more common beechwood versions, this wardrobe represents the luxury edition crafted in richly grained mahogany, a material associated with premium models produced by Thonet during the interwar period. The deep, warm tone and expressive vertical grain structure create a striking visual counterpoint to the cool, industrial aesthetic of the chrome-plated tubular steel frame—a hallmark of the Bauhaus and of Thonet’s pioneering metal furniture production. The polished chrome steel bands that outline the cabinet act almost like an architectural border, framing the warm mahogany surfaces with elegant precision. This contrast of industrial materials and noble hardwood embodies the Bauhaus ambition to harmonize craftsmanship, modern technology, and artistic clarity. Thonet Frankenberg – A Seal of Quality The Frankenberg production facilities of Thonet were integral to the firm’s transition from bentwood to tubular steel furniture in the 1920s and 1930s. Pieces made there are sought after for their meticulous construction, precise joinery, and uncompromising material standards. This wardrobe reflects the highest level of Thonet craftsmanship from this era, combining architectural discipline with luxurious execution. Architectural Design with Sculptural Presence Hageman’s background as both architect and designer is evident in the wardrobe’s proportions and structural logic. The tubular steel sides act almost like continuous building elements, extending from the floor to the upper frame in one uninterrupted line. The mahogany doors—simple, unornamented, and free of decorative excess—create a calm, vertical façade that feels simultaneously modern, sculptural, and timeless. The chrome handles and minimal hardware further reinforce its functionalist identity.
