About the Item

Painted Tyrolean Wardrobe Technical information: Period: second half of the 18th century Origin: Tyrol Wood type: Fir Height: 215 cm Width: 134 cm (148 cm with frame) Depth: 49 cm (56 cm with frame) Description: Tyrolean wardrobe from the second half of the 18th century, made entirely of fir wood, a species typical of the Alpine region, chosen for its availability, ease of workmanship, and because it is particularly suitable for casein painting. The porous and even structure of fir allows excellent adhesion of the pigments, giving the painted surfaces a velvety, matte appearance that remains stable over time. From a structural point of view, the piece is distinguished by a slender and elegant form, emphasized by its vertical proportions and by the subtle visual tapering achieved through chamfered corners. This solution softens the rigidity of the volume and gives the wardrobe a lighter, more harmonious presence. The shaped cornice, with its gently curved profile and central scroll, completes the structure with a soft movement, clearly inspired by late Baroque taste yet already tempered by a more restrained sensibility. The painted decoration, original and contemporary with the piece, is executed with a delicate and refined palette. The light green-grey background is enlivened by graceful floral motifs, stylized vases, small tendrils, and light ornamental elements, evenly distributed across the surfaces. The panel frames and moldings are highlighted with a warm, oxidized red tone, which articulates the structure without weighing it down. The overall decorative effect is sober, airy, and well-balanced, free from excess and fully coherent with the slender elegance of the form. The wardrobe can be dismantled into three parts: an independent base incorporating onion-shaped feet, and an upper body divided vertically into two halves. This solution, typical of Alpine cabinetmaking tradition, was designed to facilitate transport even in confined spaces. The interior of the wardrobe is currently empty and can be customized according to individual needs. Restoration information: The photographs show the piece in an unrestored or only partially restored condition. At the time of sale, the restoration will be completed according to the client’s tastes and wishes: the exterior will be waxed and any scratches or abrasions removed, while the interior will be cleaned and finished with shellac. Our workshop guarantees a conservative restoration, aimed at preserving the integrity and authenticity of each piece. All items are treated to ensure solidity, durability, and hygiene. At the end of the process, the wardrobe will be ready for use, suitable for storing clothing, tableware, or food. Planned interventions: Structural restoration: replacement of small missing parts, closing of any cracks in the back panel, consolidation of weakened areas, and inspection and repair of the hardware. Thorough anti-woodworm treatment. Cleaning and sanitization of the interior. Exterior finish with natural beeswax. Interior finish with shellac, a natural alcohol-based varnish. Customizations: Upon request, it is possible to agree on: the desired level of restoration; customization of the interior (addition of hanging rails, shelves, dividers, etc.).
