About the Item
China / 19th century / “Qing-Dynasty” cabinet or wardrobe / wood, copper / Antique
A large Chinese Qing Dynasty period cabinet from the 19th century with accordion doors and drawers. Created in China during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). This style of furniture is often referred to as a "wedding cabinet" or a "tapering cabinet".
This beautiful cabinet features a tapering silhouette complimented by a dark reddish brown finish. The façade is made of two accordion doors mounted with metal circular hinges and secured by a metal pin at the centre. Doors opening to reveal a hanging part, two drawers and two false drawers, offering convenient storage opportunities. Raised on four straight legs, this Qing Dynasty 19th century cabinet will make a great addition to any bedroom.
These cabinets were traditionally part of a bride's dowry and were given to the groom's family, often filled with fine silks and linens. The color red, which is a common finish for these cabinets, symbolizes good luck in China. The gift came with the intention of blessing the new family with good fortune and prosperity. Because they were given along with the bride, the cabinets are therefore called Chinese bridal cabinets.
A Chinese bridal cabinet has been a showpiece for centuries. These handcrafted pieces of furniture command attention with their elegant design, exquisite details, and unique finish. This piece, which has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original finish, would make a stunning statement a bedroom, hallway or large reception area.
Chinese cabinets are also very durable. Often made of hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or maple, they are built to last for generations.
