About the Item

A large oak storage cabinet with doors, drawers and drop-front panel design by Osvaldo Borsani, manufactured by Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, Italy, 1945 This substantial storage cabinet fully embodies the distinctive style of Osvaldo Borsani as expressed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. While its design still echoes some Art Deco influences, it clearly anticipates the more refined and resolved aesthetics that would later define mid-century Italian design. Borsani—architect, designer, and entrepreneur—was a key figure in shaping and elevating bourgeois taste through his namesake furniture company, offering pieces of unmistakable style and exceptional quality. This cabinet was clearly intended for a discerning clientele, with high expectations regarding materials and craftsmanship. What stands out immediately are the refined details: the finely carved surface (grissinato) treatment that covers the entire structure, and the thoughtful use of brass throughout. The piece features doors that disappear into the decorative facade, and drawers that are perfectly integrated into the overall front view, lending it a sense of visual unity. Opening the central drop-front panel—perfectly balanced and remarkably smooth in operation—reveals an interior enriched with exquisite brass detailing. The handles, almost sculptural in their abstract form, and the brass compasses supporting the panel are both functional and decorative. Even the door hinges, also in brass, go beyond their utilitarian role to offer an elegant, slightly whimsical touch. The contrast between the deep, rich tone of the exterior wood and the soft, pale hues chosen for the interior creates a refined visual dialogue. Each internal shelf is carefully shaped and bordered with a dark inlaid line, underscoring the continuity and coherence of the design. This is a piece of striking presence and character—not only due to the distinguished name behind it, but also because it stands as a concrete expression of the heights achieved by Italian design in the mid-20th century.
