About the Item

A highly rare two-tone Bauhaus wardrobe from the early 1930s — a museum-worthy object distinguished by its exceptional chromatic concept and architectural clarity. The doors are finished in a radiant sun-yellow lacquer, the side panels in a Bauhaus-typical sky blue. This bold, original colour pairing reflects the colour theory propagated by Kandinsky and Gropius, in which colour acted as an atmospheric and spatial element rather than ornament. Yellow and blue belong to the most fundamental tonal contrasts within Bauhaus teaching; remarkably, these hues frequently reappear in original wall finishes uncovered in restored Bauhaus houses. To see such theory applied to domestic furniture — and in such intensity — is exceedingly rare. Designed by Professor John Hagemann, architect, furniture designer and close collaborator of Mies van der Rohe, the piece translates the clarity of early European Modernism into an everyday object. The wardrobe was produced under license by the Czechoslovak firm Hynek Gottwald, renowned for tubular-steel furniture of exceptionally high manufacturing quality. The company is historically significant within the Central European modernist movement; in later years, following the occupation, it was forced into armament-related production, including aircraft seating for Messerschmitt — underscoring the rarity and cultural value of surviving early civilian pieces such as this one. The construction combines a chromed tubular steel frame with a flat-steel band at the top, enclosing blockboard panels veneered in beech — a quintessential Bauhaus material language. The original paint layers have been conservatorially preserved, cleaned and polished with respect for authenticity, without over-restoration. Chrome surfaces show only subtle age-consistent patina; all structural elements remain original and fully functional. A true artefact of Bauhaus colour culture — vividly modern, historically grounded and exceptionally scarce in this two-tone lacquered execution. A standout acquisition for advanced collectors, museums and connoisseurs of early 20th-century design.
