About the Item

René Gabriel Oak Armoire Model S154 for “Service des Constructions Provisoires”, France 1940s Rare French Reconstruction armoire model S154 by René Gabriel, France 1940s — demountable design in patinated oak for the Service des Constructions Provisoires. Rare and historically significant armoire model S154 designed by René Gabriel for the Service des Constructions Provisoires, France, 1940s. This piece belongs to the emblematic Reconstruction furniture program, created to refurnish French homes after World War II. Gabriel’s approach united functional design, rational construction, and craftsmanship of high integrity, producing furniture that was both efficient and human-centred. The structure is defined by its architectural sobriety: two paneled doors with horizontal rhythm, a solid oak frame, and slightly tapered legs giving the piece a poised stance. Designed to be fully demountable, the wardrobe could be transported and reassembled with ease—an essential innovation for post-war recovery housing. René Gabriel placed great emphasis on the quality of finish. The minimal design required perfect materials: first-choice carpentry oak, free from knots, sapwood, or imperfections. The natural grain and warm patina of the oak are celebrated here, revealing the enduring character of honest French craftsmanship. This example remains in very good original condition with authentic patina, showing minor wear consistent with age and use. It retains its single original key and original metal hardware. A beautifully preserved example of French Reconstruction design — functional, elegant, and historically meaningful.
