ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Early 1900, Antique Pair of Alabaster Wall Sconces W. Gilt Bronze Ram Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare, stylish and great quality pair of antique alabaster wall sconces. This beautiful quality and impressive pair of gilt bronze and alabaster sconces truly is a rare find. We have sold many antique alabaster pendant lights, but as far as we can remember we have never found an antique pair of alabaster wall sconces. These rare, all-handcrafted and handsome lights come with detailed and stunning, gilt bronze ram's head sculptures on either side and a grape-bunch finial at the bottom. These elements ofcourse all have a deeper, symbolic meaning to them which also makes these lights great conversation pieces. These unique wall fixtures date from circa 1910 and they will change the look and feel of an entrance or hallway or any living room like no modern lights ever could. We could mention many more places where these lights will bring class and joy, but we are certain that you and our designer clients don't need our 'advise' for that. Especially with the lights on these white alabaster shades with their organic, natural veins create a calm and pleasant atmosphere that is second to none. These handcrafted and fabulous sconces...

Unique Large Arts Crafts Brass Pendant Light with Glass Mosaic Shades 1910
Located in Lisse, NL
Good size, marvelous design and truly stylish inlaid 'chunky glass' ceiling fixture. With early 20th century light fixtures being one of our specialities, finding a unique Arts and Crafts pendant always makes our heart jump. Every designer knows that getting a truly striking design on paper is very difficult, but finding the right artisan to perfectly execute it is at least as big of a challenge. In this case the maker must have been a highly skilled craftsman, because the execution and the finish of this truly beautiful pendant are simply marvelous. What makes this hand-crafted light fixture extra special are ofcourse the inlaid and large chunks of transparent glass combined with large and smaller stained glass chunks in beautiful amber color. Both with the light switched on and off, all these uniquely shaped pieces of glass make this pendant a work of art on your ceiling. Over the many decades the color (or patina) has made this light even more beautiful and this elegant design after more than 100 years still is as appealing as the day it was made. This perfect size pendant survived two world wars and for all the crude and organical looking glass 'chunks' to still be in there AND for this light to still be this pretty and complete is like an ode to both the maker and to this lights' former owners. They clearly understood what it takes to both create and take care of something that is truly beautiful. If you have an Arts and Crafts house or if you are a collector of this sophisticated, early 20th century style then this unique pendant could be gracing your living space soon. We think it will look great in the living room of an apartment or in a hallway. No matter where you decide to use it, this superb quality crafted and excellent condition light brings class and style in your home like no modern light fixture ever could.. If you like this one of a kind light as much as we do and if you already have a space in mind for it then maybe you should be the next custodian(s). This rare light also is rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well and our price even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Current height x diameter: 40 x 28 inches. Height without the rod and canopy: 15 inches. Diameter of the canopy: 5 Inches. We can also shorten the height to one that will be perfect for you. We are driven by a passion for uniqueness, timeless, quality, stylish design, and the enduring craftsmanship of the past.
