Arts and Crafts Furniture

ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

A E Jones. A pair of hand-hammered copper vases with silver teardrop decoration
Located in London, GB
A E Jones. A pair of Arts and Crafts hand-hammered copper vases with silver teardrop decorationThe fine silver decoration to the rim and to the teardrop decoration is an egg and dart pattern, the teardrop surmounted with leaf detailing. A E Jones used this fine egg and dart silver detailing often, but what is unusual is that each silver teardrop outlines an actual repoussé teardrop in the copper body of each vase. The base of the vase is stamped with the design number 2466. This number also points to a design by Jesson, Birkett & Co. It seems between 1905 and 1910 A E Jones company started working alongside the firm of Jesson Birkett & Co and it appears that both firms made many of the same designs.Price for the pair.Albert Edward Jones (1878-1954) worked for the church metalworkers, Hardman Powell. He took classes at and was a member of the Birmingham School of Art around 1900-1902 and would have been influenced by Arthur Dixon, Arthur Gaskin, Bernard Cuzner, and Edward R Taylor...

Important Antique 8-Leg cir1901 Sideboard by Gustav Stickley
Located in Shamokin Dam, PA
This is an important Gustav Stickley 8-Leg Sideboard from 1901 in Excellent Condition with great strap hinge hardware pull hardware that you don't often see. Gustav made this model at the beginning of his work. There are very few examples of this. It was apparently too expensive to manufacture at this quality level. It is in excellent condition with original fume black finish. Also with Chamfered Board construction on the top dish holders. The sideboard also came with eight rare star wroth iron pulls. All of the hardware is iron. Signed with a 1901 box decal (as pictured). The sideboard is double pinned all around as pictured. All edges are sharp with no damage. The piece shows 99% of the original finish from nearly 125 years of normal use. Made from an excellent selection of quarter-sawn oak. All except one of the screws are original - one was missing. SIZE: Width - 69.5 in Depth - 25 in H -from floor to to top 38.5 inch PLUS 10.5 Inch for the dish holder on top. Gustav Stickley was a great artist. All of the furniture he made was "through tenon" pinned construction. This is why furniture from 120+ years ago still looks brand new. (Manufacturers of reproduction furniture use glue to "fool" buyers that their pieces are "through tenon" construction.) In the last 50 years or so, many Gustav Stickley and L&JG Stickley pieces like this one have sold for $100,000 or more. We do have have in our shop an important Gustav Stickley grandfather clock...
