ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Antique Voysey Arts Crafts Rug in Green with Floral Patterns
Located in Long Island City, NY
Hand-knotted in wool circa 1900-1910, this 9x11 antique Arts & Crafts rug is believed to be a rare work from C.F.A. Voysey. On the Design: This particular Voysey rug is believed to originate in Ireland, given its similarities to Donegal rugs of this provenance. Its design further hosts the quintessential open field that connoisseurs often associate with this artist’s signature style—though open field designs are especially collectible in handmade rugs today. The colorway enjoys chartreuse and similar greens, with bright blues and pinks in its borders and floral patterns. Its particular use of botanicals and garlands around the field lead the eye naturally to the more subtle patterns in the center—almost akin to greenery around rippling water in a pond, like many paintings of the same movement in this era. Connoisseurs will admire this as a collectible as much as an elegant masterpiece of its period—exemplary of Voysey’s European rugs. Condition: This antique botanical rug...

Antique Donegal Arts Crafts Rug in Blue with Floral Patterns
Located in Long Island City, NY
This antique 9x13 Arts & Crafts rug is a rare new Irish Donegal rug in our classic curations. Hand-knotted in wool circa 1920-1930. Further on the Design: This masterpiece is one of the few of its kind Josh has curated, and it’s an exemplar of the clear Persian and Oushak rugs that inspired European weavers in its period. This particular Irish Donegal rug boasts a montage of intricate floral patterns in sage green, red, and pink on the sky-blue background. That play of whimsical, vibrant tones on a more cool background achieves a gorgeous presence in this one-of-a-kind piece. This is a sophisticated, grand collectible, and a large-size rug with vast applications. Further on the Condition: This antique Donegal rug...
