ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Enormous 25.2Ø Hand Carved Antique Alabaster Floral Pendant / Chandelier 1910s
Located in Lisse, NL
Top class chandelier with an extra large, hand carved alabaster shade. Thanks to its extra large size and great condition this alabaster chandelier is one of the best alabaster chandeliers that we have ever seen or sold. This antique and entirely hand-carved alabaster chandelier will light up your days and evenings in a way that no modern fixture ever could. Anyone who has ever seen one in real life knows exactly what we are talking about. For this stunning, four light specimen they clearly used the perfect alabaster rock, because this unique shade comes with numerous and evenly divided black veins. That combined with the whiter veins and patches that have formed in this mineral stone over a period of thousands of years makes it truly special. We have several interior designer clients who are looking for these largest of alabaster chandeliers and they know that finding one over 25 inches in diameter is like the proverbial needle in the haystack. This not only is one of the largest (in diameter) antique alabaster pendants that we have ever had the pleasure of offering, it also is one of the deepest/highest. However, what takes this rare size chandelier to a level of its own are the scrolling leaf and flower patterns that are deeply and sharply hand carved all around the body. This level of workmanship was rare, even in the early 1900s and since this light would have cost a small fortune in those days, you can rest assure that only the best artisan would have been allowed to do these (exceptional) carvings. The original rope hanging to this monumental chandelier was 'shot' and we replaced it with bronzed chain that perfectly complements the entire look and feel of this majestic pendant. Combined with the large, original and height adjustable alabaster canopy this rare light can be used and enjoyed in all kinds of interiors and in all kinds of living spaces. For it to still be in this very good condition after more than 100 years is like an ode to the craftsmanship of early 1900 artisans in Europe. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this chandelier in general and the one of a kind, supersize shade in particular. In real life (or in person) our antiques always have that little bit extra and this unique and truly large alabaster chandelier...

Oversized Antique Irish Donegal Rug, Autumn in Ireland
Located in Dallas, TX
73478 Antique Irish Donegal Rug, 09'10 x 18'07. Evoking the essence of autumn in Ireland, where expansive boglands transition from verdant greens to the resplendent hues of rust and russet, Irish Donegal rugs draw inspiration from the breathtaking beauty of the Irish landscape. The appellation "Bloody Foreland," or "Cnoc Fola" (The Hill of Blood), finds its origins in the evening sun, casting a rich red hue upon the coastal rocks. In autumn, the hillside becomes a fiery canvas, adorned with a dense layer of ferns ablaze in russet-red-brown. Despite the absence of a historical foundation for the "bloody" name, local folklore weaves a tale of the notorious warlord "Balor of the Evil Eye," purportedly vanquished by his grandson Lugh Lamh Fhada on the slopes of Cnoc Fola. Legend holds that the hillside earned its name from the imagined blood flowing from Balor's malevolent gaze staining the land. Infused with the cultural richness and natural allure of Donegal, this oversized antique Irish Donegal rug, meticulously crafted with high-quality wool, emerges as a mesmerizing embodiment of woven artistry. Drawing inspiration from nature, the Donegal rug boasts opulent earth-tone colors that converge to create an air of stately decadence. Against a backdrop of red ochre hues, an intricate pattern unfolds, intertwining botanical forms and geometric shapes. The design is framed by a border adorned with floral leaf lattice, enclosed by floral meander and sawtooth guard borders. With its relaxed refinement and an earthy color palette drawn from the natural world, this palatial-sized antique Donegal rug exudes a wealth of character. Rendered in variegated shades of rosewood, redwood, clay pot, brick red, terra cotta, mauve, baked clay, tan, ecru, chamois, camel, taupe, brown, espresso, coffee, sand, and beige with other accent colors. Abrash. Desirable Age Wear. Hand-knotted wool. Made in Ireland. Measures: 09'10 X 18'07. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 10 x 19 Rug...
