Baroque Furniture

BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Caravaggesque Oil on Copper "Flagellation of Christ" Baroque Sicilian, 17th Cent
Located in Milano, IT
Splendid 17th-century Italian painting by unknown artist, but certainly a follower of Caravaggio, relying on style and drawing. The painting has a very beautiful gilded wooden frame, with a subtle greek with spheres and an overlying rectangular frame with sinuous flowers on each corner, very elegant and beautiful. The painting depicts one of the most depicted religious scenes ever, the scourging of Christ, and is entirely done in oil on copper. The scourging of Jesus is an episode narrated in the Gospels (Mk15:15-16; Mt27:26-27; Lk23:16-26; Jn19:1-17[1]). Scourging is a flogging, particularly bloody, by means of sticks, rods or cat-o-nine-tails, the latter instrument consisting, in the Roman typology, of a short stick to which were secured several strings ending in metal claws, leads and bone splinters that caused tremendous lacerations and fractures to the tortured person. Chains are used in this scene, both to immobilize Jesus Christ and to flog him, as we can see in the upper right hand of the scourger. According to some personal research, it turned out that the actual scourging of Christ was mostly depicted at the column, while this Christ is on the ground, so presumably Christ here is scourged during the Way of the Cross at one of those stages where he fell. The painting has a very dark coloring, which is why this painting is believed to faithfully follow Caravaggio's style of dry, authoritarian brushstrokes. The painting shows a figure agonizing on the ground that continues to receive beatings and floggings of all kinds, representing Christ; his face is crucified in a loquacious expression of pain, he turns his eyes to heaven as if to invoke God, but at the same time those same eyes admonish the wickedness and arrogance inherent in humanity. Christ has one hand resting on the ground in the act of holding himself, while the other takes a completely unnatural stance against the barren ground. His body appears hardened to wanting to parry the blows, his legs are curled up on his knees as he takes kicks from the soldier above him. Christ is depicted pinned down from the neck with a very large and strong black iron bolt held by the other soldier. The soldier on the right in the foreground wears a one-shoulder tunic with an orange tunic and blue pants. On his feet he wears gray shoes, at his waist he has a belt with an iron helmet...

An early 18th century Florentine Ebonized Wood Aedicule Case
Located in Leesburg, VA
An early 18th century Florentine ebonized wood aedicule case with gilt metal embellishments Ambit of Leonard van der Vinne Possibly first decade of the 18th century; Florence, Italy Approximate size: 83.5 (h) x 69 (w) x 23 (d) cm The cabinet’s centralized glass door is flanked by thick spiraling Solomonic columns surmounting a lower drawer. To the rear of the cabinet, the motif repeats in an eloquent display of perspectival treatment. The overall work is supported by a tiered base, elegantly conceived, and the cabinet is topped by a handsome pediment flanked by square plinths crested by gilt metal finials and an openwork frieze. The cabinet’s tempered and moderate form suggests an origin probably during the first decade or quarter of the 18th century. Although utilitarian in concept, the reserved and sublime expressiveness of this cabinet is managed with a quality and care respective of the influence of Florentine ebony cabinetry work conceived in the Galleria dei lavori or Grand Ducal Workshops of the 18th century Medici dynasty. In particular, its base mouldings echo a remarkable Night Clock...

18th Century, Venetian School Italian Landscape Oversize Painting
Located in Milano, MI
Early 18th century Italian Venetian inland painting, a large size oil on canvas Baroque mountain landscape with stream, bridge, waterfall, wayfarers and a village in the background. The woodland is animated by figures, a caravan with horsemen fishermen. This monumental Italian Baroque landscape painting has a strong impact and an excellent composition balance, as it depicts in the center the luminous perspective of a fortified village, whose side wings consist of two mountain rocks with dark wooded vegetation crowded by characters, horsemen, paths, streams. On the left side, with respect to the observer, there is a path that runs alongside a stream that flows into a waterfall in the center of the composition. from a caravan of travelers on foot and on horseback traveling along it in both directions: going up the slope on the mountainous coast you can see a church and a village near the top. The right part of the painting depicts a more sparse and dry vegetation, painted in the chromatic tones of ocher, inside of which there are dead plant, dry branches and a smaller number of figures on the rugged mountain. The iconographic inspiration of this wooded representation seems to be in the large trunk of the withered conifer in a central position, which represents a dead tree, as a? reminder of the transience of everything in life, whose phases are summarized in the two mountainous coasts. In the background a village painted in light and soft blue colors, in stark contrast to the previous scene, seems  to reassure and project us into a future season. With a suggestive theatrical effect, more than 250 cm wide, this Baroque Italian painting comes from a private collection of Milan, the canvas has been lined and shows minor painting retouches at a horizontal seam of the canvas. It is unframed, it has just a wooden profile covering the canvas edge. It is an antique Italian landscape, the perfect opportunity to make a statement. Get the perfect size painting for a great living room, to create that eye-catching focal point. You can make an impact with a single large work by hanging this early 18th century Italian Baroque painting...

Italian 17th Century Walnut Rustic Trestle Refectory Dining or Library Table
Located in Firenze, IT
This charming 17th Century massive scale rectangular refectory table, dating back to Baroque period, is a magnificent example of Tuscan rustic craftsmanship. The top consists of four large solid warm brow walnut planks capped on either end with matching pieces of walnut wood slabs. The 3 meters long and 1 meter wide tabletop rests on a trestle base composed of six massive turned baluster legs joined by a simple molded stretcher running the distance on either side making the seat even more comfortable. The simple and clean line of the top is wonderfully harmonized by the roundness of the legs, all with exceptional wood grain and texture and rich, warm great original patina throughout. In typical Tuscan fashion, this farm table is long and narrow, featuring a very rustic but clever construction: two wooden pegs and thick joints on each side allow the top to easily separate from the base for easy transportation. This is "The Table" solid and sturdy a wonderful and warm piece, rich in history and rare. The four plank cleated detachable top is of superb color and figuring. This versatile antique refectory table can be used as a hall, dining or serving table. It has character and is simply stunning from every angle making a fabulous statement in any room both in your countryside home or in the most elegant setting. A number of early solid walnut pieces which we have sold have harmonized very well with modern interiors. Any kind of dinner service will be enhanced by the sobriety of this table that will stand up to no end of use. This rustic and lasting table can be free-standing or would be perfect also leaned on the wall as a huge console...

Snuff Box Monocrome Miniature Hand Painted Sterling Silver Enamel Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Round snuff box in 925/1000 sterling silver gold plated with fired enamel on the enameled edge with vertical stripes and fine monochrome miniature hand painted by the painter Renato Dainelli. Diameter cm. 6.2 cm high. 3.4. Weight gr. 222. Designed by Franco Salimbeni in 1967 and produced in Florence in the Salimbeni company headquarters with manual workmanship by skilled artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous high-fire enamelled firings at approximately 750 < 800° C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene. Some colors must have darker tones than others because then, by superimposing the transparent enamel placed at the end of the miniature, they fade. This transparent layer, called “fondant” in jargon, must be smoothed and polished like all other translucent enamel colors. The miniatures with water tempera colors are painted on real ivory...
