FOLK ART STYLE

Folk art is a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Antique, new and vintage folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, duck decoys, portraiture and paintings, carnival art and quilts.

Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.

Elsewhere, the vast range of work associated with Mexican folk art includes masks made by Mexican craftspeople for traditional celebrations and ceremonial dances. Mexican masks are part of the country’s folk-art traditions that go back thousands of years and play a role in festivals and theater.

Works in the folk art tradition are valuable because of the skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story.

During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.

Folk art brings vibrant culture and traditions into your home. Browse an extensive collection of antique, new and vintage folk art on 1stDibs.

Ironwood Hand crafted in amazing detail from one of earth's hardest natural ironwood. This are authentic art pieces crafted in the Sonoran Desert from native Olneya ironwood. Found almost exclusively in the desert of Arizona, this tree is truly one of nature's wonders. North American Southwestern desert ironwood gets its name from its amazing hardness and heavy weight (similar to petrified wood). Though this wood is very difficult to work, it is meticulously carved and etched to reveal incredible detail. in Very nice polished heavy dark wood, no dents with a smooth finish overall excellent condition with beautiful visible wood grains. "Mexican ironwood carvings is a handcraft that began with the Seri indigenous people of the state of Sonora. The wood comes from Olneya tesota, a Sonora Desert tree commonly called ironwood (palo fierro in Spanish). It is a slow growing important shade tree found in northwest Mexico and the southwest U.S. The wood it produces is so dense that it lacks air bubbles and sinks in water. The Ironwood comes from the heavy, dense heart wood that trees produce. The wood is one of the heaviest in the world. Traditionally, it was used for firewood and charcoal with some carving. In the mid-20th century, the Seri had to move from their traditional home of Tiburon Island to the mainland, around the same time tourism was developing in Kino Bay. The first to carve ironwood for sale was Jose Astorga...

Hand-Carved German Tramp Art Chest of Drawers, 19th Century
Located in Atlanta, GA
This striking German Tramp Art chest of drawers dates to the 19th century and exemplifies the highly labor-intensive folk carving tradition associated with Central European vernacular furniture. Constructed in softwood, the chest is entirely covered in dense, repetitive chip-carved geometric motifs, creating a richly textured surface across the drawer fronts, sides, and base. The façade is organized with four drawers, each fitted with original brass hardware that provides a warm contrast to the carved wood surface. The top features a checkerboard-style plank construction, further reinforcing the handcrafted character of the piece. The carving is notably deep and consistent, suggesting skilled, time-consuming manual work rather than decorative surface tooling. The proportions and solid build give the chest a strong architectural presence, making it suitable not only as storage but also as a focal decorative object in an interior. Pieces of this type are often associated with itinerant or workshop-based folk traditions in German-speaking regions, where Tramp Art techniques were widely practiced in the late 19th century. An inscription visible on the back—executed in reverse and likely an early ownership mark—appears to be Germanic in origin, further supporting the Central European attribution. This chest would integrate naturally into interiors favoring folk art, rustic European, Brutalist, or collected eclectic styles, and stands as a compelling example of authentic 19th-century Tramp Art furniture.

Large Vintage Balinese Painting on Silk from Ubud Bali 1960 s
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
Mid 20th Century Balinese Painting on silk fabric, Framed. Vintage large Balinese art painting, from Ubud, Bali acrylic on silk. Beautiful artwork by the Indonesian artist from Ubud. Painted in Peliatan, Ubud Bali by VJ. Kupur as signed on the bottom left hand corner. Balinese Folk Festival ceremonial procession, Ink and acrylic paint on canvas. Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style. The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. About Bali Art...
