Native American Furniture

NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE

Native American broadly describes any Indigenous people in North America and encompasses hundreds of tribes and groups, all with distinct cultures. Native American–style furniture and decor likewise varies widely, from pieces created by Indigenous people to those appropriated by non-native designers.

Indigenous furniture’s rich heritage includes the bentwood boxes of the Northwest Coast carved from cedar for storing household or ceremonial objects. Generations of Native American people have made baskets for holding household items, with those in the Northeast using sweetgrass and those in the Southeast using pine needles and wicker. Artisans in the Plateau region wove watertight pieces like cradles from plant materials. Although these objects were intricately made, they were usually utilitarian rather than decorative.

The colonization of North America and the removal of Indigenous people from their lands led to the suppression of these practices. Many styles that used Native American motifs — such as Southwestern style, which was heavily influenced by the geometric patterns of Navajo textiles — have historically not involved Indigenous creators and, instead, have taken their traditions without their tribal context.

When decorating a home with Native American–style furniture, it is important to do so respectfully, by understanding the origins of motifs and objects and examining who profits from their sale. There are now Indigenous-led companies, such as Cherokee designer Cray Bauxmont-Flynn’s Amatoya and Totem House Design, promoting Indigenous work in furniture and home decor. Supporting Indigenous artists and artisans is essential to confronting the still pervasive issue of cultural appropriation in design.

Multi-Figure 7 Foot Nuu-chah-nulth TOTEM
Located in Coeur d Alene, ID
This large pole was “donated to a church on the northern tip of Vancouver Island for a fundraiser” sometime around 1905. The pole is carved in a folk-art style that is correct for the period. The imagery on this pole is quite fascinating and includes a large bird whose wings form the face of a composite creature holding what appears to be a whale or fish. Below that is what appears to be a Sisiutl, or three-headed sea serpent. Under the Sisiutl is a pair of animal heads flanking the pole, perhaps wolves, over a colonial bald eagle. This pole is a large and early Nuu-chah-nulth totem carving...

Antique Navajo Rug, Dimond Design
Located in Evanston, IL
Embark on a journey into the past with our rare and captivating Antique Navajo Rug, a magnificent textile masterpiece that captures the essence of history and craftsmanship. Dating back to the 1920s-1930s, this rug is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Navajo people. With its massive dimensions measuring 50 by 92 inches, this Navajo weaving is a true marvel. What sets it apart is its unique whitish tan background, a departure from the traditional grey, achieved through the use of natural-colored yarns. This distinctive choice adds an air of elegance and rarity to this already exceptional piece. The Dimond design, closely related to Ganado, takes on its own identity through its iconic Ganado Red and the central focus on an elongated. The influence of oriental design is evident in the border design adorning the diamond, offering a cross-cultural connection that speaks to the rich tapestry of artistic influences. A border of steeped red triangles adds an extra layer of depth and dimension, while full and half grey diamonds adorned with arrows and feathers at the corners weave stories of tradition and symbolism. This large Navajo rug...

Circa 1900 Salish Totem
Located in Coeur d Alene, ID
This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker. Patinated with cabin smoke. 15" PERIOD: Circa 1900 ORIGIN: Northwest Coast SIZE: 15" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West.
