Neoclassical Furniture

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Exceptional George III Teapot by Preeminent Silversmith Paul Storr, 1793
Located in Tel Aviv - Jaffa, IL
This rare and exceptional George III teapot is the work of preeminent Georgian silversmith Paul Storr, it is one of his earliest works, the date mark on this pieces of the year 1793 which is the first year Storr marked items with his own initials (P S) The teapot is designed in the neoclassical taste with some Chinese influences, or Chinoiserie taste, though the decoration shows signs of later 19th century enhancement in the technique and style of the chasing. It is very hard to impossible to find works from this early period with this interesting Royalty provenance. The family crest on the front is of the Tollemache family, and dating of The teapot indicate It belonged and probably commissioned by or as a gift to William Manners Tollemache, Lord Huntingtower, William, On 12 January 1793, at the Age of 26, he was created a Baronet, of Hanby Hall in the County of Lincoln. So this teapot was commissioned to celebrate the occasion. William Manners Tollemache: Lord Huntingtower (19 May 1766 – 11 March 1833), known as Sir William Manners, Bt, between 1793 and 1821, was a British nobleman And Tory politician. Born William Manners, he was the eldest son of John Manners and Louisa Tollemache, 7th Countess of Dysart. On 12 January 1793, at the age of 26, he was Ceated a Baronet, of Hanby Hall in the County of Lincoln. On his mother's Succession to the earldom in 1821, he was styled Lord Huntingtower, and adopted The surname of Talmash or Tollemache Paul Storr: (baptised 28 October 1770 in London – 18 March 1844 in London) was an English goldsmith and silversmith working in the Neoclassical and other styles During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His works range from Simple tableware to magnificent sculptural pieces made for royalty Paul Storr was England's most celebrated silversmith during the first half of the Nineteenth century and his legacy lives on today. His pieces historically and Currently adorn royal palaces and the finest stately homes throughout Europe and The world. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical Style developed in the Regency period. He quickly became the most prominent Silversmith of the nineteenth century, producing much of the silver purchased by King George III and King George IV. Storr entered his first mark in the first part of 1792, which reflects his short-lived partnership with William Frisbee. Soon after, he Began to use his PS mark, which he maintained throughout his career with only Minor changes. His first major work was a gold font commissioned by the Duke of Portland...

Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Side or Console Tables in Neoclassical Style
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A Fine Pair of Late 19th Century Demilune Satinwood and Inlaid Side or Console Tables in the Neoclassical Style Attributed to Edwards and Roberts This fine pair of neoclassical-style tables are of demilune, or semicircular, shape and veneered principally in satinwood. Large-scale panels of satinwood have been laid on the carcass of the frieze to give a segmented effect, which is very attractive. The tapering square-sectioned legs and contrasting spade toes are all classic Sheraton design features, being reused here a century later. The most impressive parts of the tables are undoubtedly the beautiful tops, with the central feature being an inlaid fan-shaped patera, centered by a smaller example of the same form with additional penwork foliage on it. This, in turn, centers on a semicircular feathered boss. Around the edge of the tabletops is a wide crossbanding upon which a repeating neoclassical design featuring penwork scrolling foliage and urns is delicately executed and highly attractive. Footnote: The quality of the present tables indicates that they would have been produced in one of the leading workshops of the period. On stylistic grounds, the most likely maker is Edwards and Roberts. Particularly adept at producing furniture in the inlaid Sheraton style, the firm had an elite clientele and, as such, was able to make the finest furniture without cutting corners. For an example of a Carlton House table...

Vintage Wrought-Iron Diana the Huntress Pattern Garden Bench with Upholstery
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Molla painted wrought iron upholstered garden bench from the mid-20th century depicting Diana, goddess of the hunt and her arrows. Created in the midcentury, this exquisite iron bench features a nicely weathered painted finish. Revealing its neoclassical influence, the nicely curved back is adorned with arrow motifs in its upper section that give us a hint about the character depicted below in each pierced splat. We are indeed in the presence of Diana, goddess of the moon and of the hunt, also known as Artemis in Greek mythology. Dressed in her typical garment and showcasing the moon crescent on her head, she is ready to draw an arrow from her quiver. One of her canine companions is placed behind her. Both of them are surrounded by delicate foliage reminding us of Diana's taste for the outdoors. Two scrolling open arms flank the rectangular seat, recovered with a new upholstery. The ensemble is raised on eight slightly splaying legs. With its neoclassical theme and weathered patina, this American painted bench...
