Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

1970s Signed Vintage Pastel Persian Shirfar Tabriz Wool and Fine Silk Rug
Located in Dallas, TX
21676 Vintage Persian Shirfar Tabriz Rug, 05'10 x 09'06. Crafted by the skilled hands of Shir Far, a revered master weaver hailing from Tabriz, Iran, this vintage Persian Tabriz rug embodies the essence of exquisite artistry and timeless elegance. Shir Far is renowned for his unparalleled craftsmanship, distinguished by high-quality materials, distinctive designs, and captivating color combinations. His hallmark, a signature cartouche inscription delicately centered within the guard border, serves as a testament to his mastery and attention to detail. Intricately designed with a touch of Rococo opulence, this hand-knotted wool and silk vintage Persian Shirfar Tabriz rug exudes an air of timeless elegance. The allover floral motif, delicately woven in soft pastel hues, evokes a sense of refined grandeur reminiscent of Rococo aesthetics. At the heart of the rug lies a cusped medallion, surrounded by a lush floral featuring blooming palmettes, curled sickle leaves, and cascading arabesque vines adorned with peonies, carnations, and lotus flowers. The medallion's ornate design is further accentuated by dramatic corner spandrels, boasting intricate baroque elements that set the stage for an abundance of flower garlands and organic leafy mounds. Encapsulating the floral medallion is a border adorned with a variation of Rococo-inspired floral motifs, delicately intertwined with inner and outer botanical floral guard bands. The border exudes decadent beauty, framing the rug with a sense of lavishness and refinement characteristic of Rococo design. The dreamy color palette, with its soft pastel tones, adds to the rug's allure, creating a harmonious balance between elegance and subtlety. With its elaborate detailing and sophisticated design, this vintage floral Persian rug...

Bow Pair of Porcelain Figures, Arlecchino and Columbina, Rococo ca 1758
Located in London, GB
This is a wonderful pair of figures of Arlecchino and Columbina, made by the Bow Porcelain factory in about 1758. These figures formed part of a series of the Commedia dell'Arte, a very popular series of theatrical figures that served as decoration at the dinner table in the 18th Century. The Bow Porcelain Factory was one of the first potteries in Britain to make soft paste porcelain, and most probably the very first to use bone ash, which later got perfected by Josiah Spode to what is now the universally used "bone china". Bow was the main competitor of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, but where Chelsea made very fine slipcast porcelain, Bow made a different soft paste porcelain that tended to be softer and could be pressed into moulds. Bow served a larger public generally at lower prices. The factory was only in operation between 1743 and 1774, after which the tradition got incorporated into some of the later famous potteries such as Worcester and Derby. These figures were used to adorn the dinner table when dessert was served; groups of figures served to express something about the host, the guests, or to direct the conversation. The Italian Commedia Dell'Arte, a comical form of masked theatre, was very popular in those days and Bow copied many figures of the German Meissen series that were brought out in the decades before. This pair dates from about 1758, which was at the height of Bow's ability to make beautiful figurines often copied from Chelsea or Meissen. The pair is modelled after a Meissen pair by Kaendler. The porcelain is translucent with a beautiful milky glaze - Bow was probably the first pottery using bone in its porcelain recipe. Arlecchino (Harlequin) is playing the bagpipes, dressed in an odd costume of mismatched chintz and playing cards and wearing a funny black trumpet...
