Jean-Emile Buland was born in Paris in 1857 into a family of artists. His father, Jean-Marie Buland (1825-1895), was an engraver and his brother, Jean-Eugène (1852-1926), was a painter. Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880. He received a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and a first-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1901.
Antoine Calbet, born August 16, 1860 in Engayrac (Lot-et-Garonne) and died August 21, 1942 in Paris, was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier by Édouard-Antoine Marsal (1845-1929), where he learned drawing, this draftsman and illustrator, a painter of nudes and romantic scenes, was sought after during his lifetime. He was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He was a member of the Fine Arts admissions jury from 1913 to 1930. He began exhibiting in 1880 and became a member of the Society of French Artists. He was a friend of French President Armand Fallières.
He received several medals at the Salon des Artistes Français and a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition for his work on a panel for the pavilion of the Ministry of Colonies.
The French Society of Friends of the Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Bust of Bacchante by Auguste Baptiste Clesinger, Rome, 1857
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A large bronze bust showing a beautiful young woman depicted as a Bacchante, the Greek Goddess of Wine, her head festooned with grape branches. The bust is supported by an integral bronze plinth that at the back is inscribed with the name of the sculptor, J. Clesinger Rome 1857 dating the bronze to the time when the sculptor was 33 years old.
The sculptor whose full name was Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger was born in 1813 in Besancon in Southern France. His father, Georges-Philippe, was a sculptor and trained Auguste in art. Auguste first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Vicomte Jules de Vaidahon. At the 1847 Salon, he created a sensation with his Woman bitten by a serpent, produced from life-casts from his model Apollonie Sabartier who was a notorious Parisian and the mistress of many perhaps even of Clesinger himself. Later he also produced this bust of her as Bacchante.
In private life, the sculptor was awarded one of France’s highest honour, the knight’s cross...
