Julien Deturck (1862-1941) "The Young Brother" after William Bouguereau 1901
Located in Argenteuil, IDF
Beautiful etching on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1900. Title "Le jeune frère" engraved by Julien Deturck (1862-1941), after the painting by William Bouguereau (1825-1905) The engraving is in very good condition Dimensions: "Le jeune frère" etching: Sheet: 460 x 328 mm - Engraving: 210 x 152 mm - Engraving plate: 270 x 198 mm Engraved signature: J. Deturck below the engraving on the right Engraved signature W Bouguereau 1900 in the engraving at the bottom left & Blank signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts under the engraving lower right. Julien Deturck, pseudonym of Jules Alphonse Deturck, born in Bailleul on February 23, 1862 and died in Belvès on December 18, 1941, was a French engraver and pastel artist. In 1887, he was admitted to Alexandre Cabanel's class and was also a student of Léon Bonnat and Gustave Jacquet. Seeing the purity of his drawings, the latter advised him to focus on engraving. He was then admitted to the class of Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont, whose engraver Jules Gabriel Levasseur was his substitute. In 1888, he was awarded the second Grand Prix de Rome for intaglio engraving. After graduating from the Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself primarily to engraving and pastel. He achieved his first success in 1894 for the engraving of a Tanagra discovered in Athens by the architect Titeux. He achieved his second success for the engraving The Dream of Eros after the painting by Jules Machard. He received a 3rd class medal at the 1899 Salon, then a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. In 1901, he won the 2nd class medal at the 1901 Salon for the engraving The Young Brother after the painting by William Bouguereau. Adolphe William Bouguereau, born on November 30, 1825 in La Rochelle and died on August 19, 1905, was a French painter. In his realist paintings, he used mythological themes, offering modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female figure. He was one of the major representatives of French academic painting of the late 19th century. The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Beautiful romantic engraving of a brother and sister from the early 20th century
Located in Argenteuil, IDF
Beautiful etching on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1920. Title "Frère et soeur" (brother and sister) engraved by Adolphe Grauk (1865-1945), after the painting by Aimé Nicolas Morot (1850-1913) The engraving is in very good condition with some fading to the right edge of the sheet which will not be visible when the engraving is framed Dimensions: "Frère et soeur" etching: Sheet: 460 x 332 mm - Engraving: 250 x 250 mm - Engraving plate: 320 x 280 mm Engraved signature: A. Grauk below the engraving on the right & Blank signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts under the engraving lower right. Adolphe Crauk, born in Valenciennes on May 24, 1865 and died on December 13, 1945, was a French engraver and painter. A pupil of David Joseph Desvachez in Valenciennes and then in Paris of Alexandre Cabanel, Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont, and Jules Jacquet, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1887 onward, receiving an honorable mention in 1893, a 3rd-class medal in 1896, a travel grant in 1897, and a 1st-class medal in 1905, the year he was selected as an hors-competition. He also received an honorable mention at the 1900 World's Fair. Aimé Nicolas Morot, born on June 16, 1850 in Nancy and died on August 12, 1913 in Dinard, was a French painter and sculptor. He studied at the Nancy School of Drawing and Painting under Claude-Émile Thiéry and Charles Sellier before becoming, through a competitive examination, a student of the painter Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on May 31, 1869. He competed four times, unsuccessfully, for the Prix de Rome, before winning in 1873 with The Captivity of the Jews in Babylon. Upon marrying Suzanne Gérôme, he became the son-in-law of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme; he was a friend of the painter and sculptor Édouard Paul Mérite. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1880 to 1912, where he received a medal of honor for his first participation for The Good Samaritan. As an academic and professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des artistes français in Paris, and a member of the painting jury, Aimé Morot was an influential figure in Parisian art circles, one of the 18 most influential members of the Institut de France. The Soap Bubble Game in Lithography by the Friends of the Arts, Paris, 1900
Located in Argenteuil, IDF
Beautiful lithograph on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1900. Title "Les bulles de savon" (The Soap Bubble Game) lithographed by Jules-Gabriel Dubois-Menant (1855-1921), after the painting by Joseph Bail (1862-1921) The lithograph is in very good condition with a small amount of sunning on the right edge of the sheet that will not be visible when the print is framed. Dimensions: "Les bulles de savon" print: Sheet: 320 x 456 mm - Engraving: 210 x 305 mm + signature Engraved signature: Duboismenant below the lithograph on the right & Embossed stamp/Signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts below the print in the lower right corner. Jules Gabriel Dubois-Menant (1855-1921) was a French painter, lithographer, and photographer specializing in portraiture. In addition to portraits painted in oils and pastels, he produced original and reproduction lithographs. He was a member of the Society of French Lithographers, for which he wrote a booklet. He participated in the series of Painters-Lithographers albums from 1892 onward, and later joined the Society of Painters-Lithographers. One of his notable lithographs is The Old Goat Sheepfold, as well as a portrait of Jules Verne (Salon of 1897). Joseph Bail (1862-1921) was a French naturalist painter. Younger brother of the painter Franck Bail (1858-1924), Joseph Bail received his first training from his father, Antoine Jean Bail (1830-1919), a practitioner of the realist tradition of genre subjects, before passing through the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran[2]. As a teenager, he produced his first still lifes in 1878 (Sea Fish and Oysters). A year later, he presented works at the Salon des Artistes Français. A few years later, he became one of the youngest recipients of the medal of honor for his painting Trinkets from the Cluny Museum at the Salon of 1886, then for his famous The Kitchen Boy (1887). Passionate about the world of gastronomy, he painted food as much as those who helped to prepare it. He portrays the kitchen boys in different ways in La Cigarette ou Le Repos (1892), as well as in La Besogne faite (1893), where the young assistant, slumped on a chair, casually smokes a cigarette. He continued in the same vein with Les Cuisiniers (1894), Reflections of the Sun (1895), and Battle of Dogs (1896). He received the gold medal at the 1900 World's Fair for three major works: Le Goûter (Tea Time), Bulles de savon (Soap Bubbles), and La Servante (The Maid).[4] The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous eminent subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Antique English Painting “Lake Nemi, Italy” 1865 by John Wilson Carmichael
By Carmichael
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present work is an interesting scene for a number of reasons, including importantly its time of execution in 1865. It was during a period of his retirement to Scarsborough following time spent in Italy, sketching the major lakes and landscapes in the northern part of the country. Likely executed in his studio using the preparatory sketches made of the area during these travels, the scene captures an idyllic view of Lake Nemi during sunset. It is rich in fall colors as light cascades through the haze of clouds and strikes the turning leaves of the trees, casting long shadows along the meadow grasses. The blue waters of Lake Nemi are cool and reflect the landscape bordering the shore. The focal point of the scene is a family of three that is taking the day to hike the local countryside, breaking along a rock to enjoy the lovely views. The work is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and the original frame retains a label on it from John Hay Son, an art dealer, framer and gilder in John Wilson Carmichael...
