Tabriz Furniture

TABRIZ STYLE

Tabrīz rugs and carpets are named for their place of origin — the northwestern Iranian city of Tabrīz (or Tabriz). To collectors of antique and vintage Persian carpets and rugs, it is one of history’s best-known hubs for textiles and other handicrafts. Tabriz is among the most populous cities in Iran and home to a rich tradition of hand-knotted rugs. The region’s weavers and their craft flourished under the Safavid dynasty between the 12th and 16th centuries after the Safavids wrested control of the city from the Turks.

Aside from asymmetrical knots, the characteristics of antique Tabriz rugs and carpets include intricate patterns and designs woven from silk and wool. (Antique rugs are primarily woven from the latter.) Like Turkish rugs, Tabriz and other Persian rugs often reflect the region where they were made and typically feature floral and garden motifs with bold maroon, gold and red palettes. The most iconic motif found in Tabriz rugs is a central medallion that radiates outward into other star-shaped pendants and cartouches, with quarter medallions positioned on the corners, while special variations feature curling arabesque floral motifs and hunting scenes. There are rich hues of ivory, copper, terracotta and burgundy with complementing highlights of navy blue and deep green.

While weavers traditionally rely on their fingers to produce the knots in Persian rugs and carpets, local weavers in Tabriz utilize a knife with a buttonhook-like projection to increase their speed. Some of the region’s artisans have set records for weaving faster than one knot per second. These rugs feature an integration of knots that are both Persian and Turkish in origin, and have a double weft made with cotton, wool or silk and cotton warps. This unique process makes these textiles the product of one of the finest and most delicate rug-making traditions in the world.

Tabriz carpets, along with other types of Persian rugs, have experienced a contemporary revival in the past few decades and are a coveted and distinctive piece of craftsmanship in many homes and other interior spaces.

Vintage Persian Mahi Tabriz Rug, 11 11 x 17 08
Located in Dallas, TX
78414 Vintage Persian Mahi Tabriz Rug, 11'11 x 17'08. This hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Mahi Tabriz rug is a remarkable testament to the enduring artistry of Persian weavers. Its central feature is a beautifully intricate lobed medallion, richly detailed and anchored by elegant palmette pendants at either end, creating a mesmerizing focal point. The medallion's elaborate geometry and detailed motifs are encased within a warm, regal color palette, enhancing the overall sophistication and allure of the rug. This medallion is perfectly symmetrical, showcasing the meticulous skill and planning that goes into traditional Persian rug making. Surrounding the central medallion, the rug is adorned with the timeless Herati pattern, which covers the entirety of the field in a precise, orderly fashion. The Herati motif, known for its symbolic representation of fish (Mahi) swimming in water, is a classic element in Persian rugs and is thought to signify abundance and luck. This pattern consists of a floral center encased in a diamond, flanked by curving leaves that recall the fluid motion of fish beneath the moonlit water, echoing themes of renewal and nature's continuous cycle. The borders of the Persian Tabriz rug are equally magnificent, enclosed with a traditional Herati border that complements the central field, and flanked by multiple guard bands. These borders are intricately patterned with a series of smaller, detailed motifs that enhance the rug’s grandeur, making it not just a piece of decor, but a focal point that commands attention. The detailed bordering frames the central design beautifully, reinforcing the rug’s structured aesthetic and its connection to the natural world. This vintage Persian Mahi Tabriz rug encapsulates the splendor of Persian rug craftsmanship with its decadent beauty and sophisticated color scheme. Ideal for elevating traditional furnishings, this rug can transform any space into a regal setting, blending rich history with exquisite design. The rug’s deep, warm colors and intricate patterns offer a timeless elegance that can complement both modern and classic interiors, making it a cherished piece for any collector or enthusiast of fine textiles. Rendered in variegated shades of red, navy blue, beige, green, sky blue, tan, and pink with other accent colors. Desirable Age Wear. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 11'11 x 17'08. Haji Khalili Antique Persian Tabriz Rug, 13 01 x 17 03
Located in Dallas, TX
74321 Haji Khalili Antique Persian Tabriz Rug, 13'01 x 17'03. Haji Khalili Persian Tabriz rugs are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and intricate designs, originating from Tabriz in northwestern Iran. These rugs are known for their high-quality materials, expert weaving, and high knot density, making them both durable and detailed. They feature a variety of designs, including medallions, floral patterns, and detailed pictorial scenes, with vibrant colors and complex patterns as hallmarks. Named after Haji Jalili, a master weaver from the late 19th to early 20th century, these rugs are prized for their artistic and cultural value. Jalili was celebrated for his innovative designs and use of softer, more subtle color palettes compared to other Persian rugs. Due to their quality, beauty, and historical importance, Haji Khalili Tabriz rugs are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, often considered not just floor coverings but works of art. In the realm of artistic expression, this oversized hand-knotted wool Haji Khalili antique Persian Tabriz rug is a masterpiece, weaving magic and history into its fibers. At the heart of this enchanting piece lies an eight-point beige medallion, serenely floating within a brown cusped center medallion, anchored by delicate finials that whisper tales of ancient craftsmanship. This central jewel is set against an open, abrashed field, a canvas that speaks softly of the passage of time and the gentle touch of artisans' hands. Surrounding this medallion, the elaborate spandrels bloom with delicate floral details, a dance of petals and leaves that mirror the central design, drawing the eye back to the heart of the rug. This intricate ballet of nature's beauty is framed within the bounds of a Herati border, a variation that carries its own legacy in each twist and turn. Flanked by inner and outer guard bands and stripes, this border serves as a testament to the meticulous skill and patience of its creators, enhancing the rug's allure with each patterned layer. This rug, with its timeless design and warm, inviting colors, creates an atmosphere of calm elegance and harmony. The grand-scale curvilinear patterns and the intimate blending of hues foster a sense of serenity and sophistication. This highly versatile antique Persian Tabriz rug is more than a mere adornment for the floor; it is a sanctuary, capable of grounding nearly any space with its tranquil presence and enduring charm. Rendered in variegated shades of tan, ecru, camel, sand, beige, brown, coffee, chocolate, brick red, rust, burnt orange, and terra cotta with accents of ocher, brass, taupe, and greige with other accent colors.
