About the Item

An exceptionally rare and architecturally refined mid-century bar cart, dating to the 1950s and constructed with a tubular steel frame and two tiers of wrapped perforated steel shelves. The use of rolled-edge perforated metal — rather than flat mesh — is a key design feature closely associated with Mathieu Matégot’s Rigitulle technique, which treated industrial material with sculptural sensitivity. Similarly, the precise geometric structure and elegant proportions evoke the work of Tjerk Reijenga and the Dutch firm Pilastro, known for their modular iron and steel furnishings. This cart’s frame is formed from slender black tubular steel, supporting two enameled off-white perforated trays that appear to float within the structure — a visual lightness characteristic of the era’s most innovative design. The mesh shelves are not simply laid flat, but rather wrapped and curved around the support structure, adding a rare degree of craftsmanship and design intention. Original rolling casters allow for effortless mobility while maintaining the minimalist silhouette. A rare opportunity to acquire a 1950s bar cart that strongly echoes the design languages of two important postwar European designers. Whether by Reijenga, Matégot, or another studio working at their level, it remains a standout piece for collectors of mid-century metalwork and refined postwar modernist design.
