About the Item

The Herbert Hirche serving trolley, designed in 1956 and produced by Holzäpfel, is a landmark of post-war German rationalist design. Its clean, minimalist structure consists of slender metal angles supporting two satin-finished, ribbed glass shelves, exemplifying Hirche’s mastery of reduction and functional elegance. Hirche, a Bauhaus-trained designer and key figure in Germany’s post-war design movement, combined rigorous craftsmanship with practicality. Beyond furniture, he was instrumental in shaping modern design at Braun and served as Professor - and later Rector - of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The trolley’s enduring appeal lies in its clarity of form and versatility, making it both a functional serving piece and a design icon. This offered example is from the first edition by Christian Holzäpfel and highly collectible.
