Unusual Carved Oak Bar Cart from Brittany, France, Early 1900s

About the Item

An unusual beverage table from Brittany, France, this bar cart was designed for the utmost portability, traversing via a pair of 16-inch wooden wheels. Typically, bar carts of this age (early 1900s), would be crafted from metal, namely brass or iron, with small wheels, such as the 2 ½ metal caster wheel on the front of our cart. The caster is affixed just beneath a pair of volute scrolls at the bottom of a shaped leg whose façade is adorned with a leafed margent dotted with a small flower. A much larger foliate display embellishes each side of the cart, just beneath the top tray of the two-tier cart. Both impressive, pierced margents also connect to a vertical shaft above the cart axle, which joins the two larger wheels. The wheels have eight turned spokes emanating from a hub festooned with a sunflower. A husked motif encompasses the wheel, just beneath a protruding rubber tread. Both trays have a thin molded railing that rests on numerous tiny balusters, mirroring the shape of the spokes. Beneath the balusters is a rolling apron sculpted with small fluting that gives it a leaf-like appearance. The bottom tier has four raised circles, perfectly carved to function as a collar for holding bottles in place when moving the cart. Based on the production date and the vivid motifs that were inspired by nature, our oak bar cart from Brittany is period Art Nouveau. It would make a fantastic addition to a bar or wine room, salon, or any room that requires a unique side table or drink service.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Very good antique condition. Minor losses and rubs to wood. Some wear to rubber tread on large wheels, commensurate with age and use. Light scratch to top tray and front caster wheel has shifted slightly, also from decades of use and relocation.
