About the Item
Elegant George III-style open-fretted mahogany tea table, circa 1910–1930, with pierced gallery and X-form stretchers, richly patinated and finely detailed. From the Iris Apfel Collection, reflecting the celebrated designer’s passion for craftsmanship and cross-cultural British Colonial design.
England (or possibly India for the Anglo-Indian market), early- to mid-20th century
Dimensions: 32″ H × 30.25″ L × 24.25″ W
A finely hand-carved George III-style mahogany open-fretted tea table, the rectangular top with an intricate pierced gallery, raised on square chamfered legs with corresponding fretwork and joined by shaped X-form stretchers centered by a raised platform. The craftsmanship—crisp, rhythmic scrollwork and symmetrical foliate cutouts—reflects 18th-century Chippendale influence and the taste for Chinese Chippendale design that flourished in Georgian England.
Executed in dense, well-grained mahogany with a warm chocolate-brown patina, the table exhibits a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow through its fret-carved elements. Such tables were traditionally used for serving tea or displaying decorative porcelains in refined drawing rooms, and later reinterpreted in the early-20th-century revival period by English cabinetmakers and Anglo-Indian workshops alike.
Given its quality, proportions, and finish, this example likely dates to circa 1910–1930, in the manner of Edwards
Roberts or a comparable London maker specializing in Georgian revival furniture for an international clientele.
Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection — Acquired from the personal collection of Iris Apfel (1921–2024), the legendary American tastemaker known for her exuberant mixing of historic European and global design. Her furniture holdings, like her fashion, celebrated craftsmanship, pattern, and personality in equal measure.
Condition:
Good overall. Top surface shows wear and light scratches to finish; minor wear to legs; one arm of X-stretcher detached and requires re-gluing. Structurally sound and visually striking, presenting beautifully.
