About the Item

English, circa 1745 The rectangular, solid mahogany top is exquisitely carved with ribbons and floral ornamentation above a convex frieze finely worked with interlaced strapwork and set over a richly gadrooned moulding. The four cabriole legs are embellished with scrolling acanthus and terminate in boldly modelled hairy-paw feet. When opened, the table reveals a superb solid mahogany surface suitable for serving drinks or for card play. The quality of the mahogany employed in this piece is of the finest grade. Comparable examples—closely related in both design and execution—were included in the celebrated collection of Percival Griffiths at Sandridgebury, Hertfordshire. Another table with similar carving is held in the Philadelphia Museum. The carvings on this small and distinctive group are of notably unusual design. In addition to the exceptional sculptural work, this table is further distinguished by its star-shaped stamped decoration, in place of the more commonly encountered circular punchwork. Taken together, the extraordinary features found on these rare tables prompt one to wonder for whom they were originally commissioned, as so many of their characteristics appear unique to this limited and remarkable group.
