The History of Gold Leaf Gilding
The origin of gold leaf gilding dates back to antiquity, with the first applications found in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. Later, during the medieval period and especially in the Renaissance, this technique was refined, becoming an essential element in sacred art. In particular, gilding was widely used in the decoration of icons, altars and religious works. Finally, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, gold leaf gilding reached its peak thanks to the Baroque and Rococo styles, known for their heavy use of gold in decorating furniture, ceilings, and frames, making these rooms rich and opulent.
Types of Gold Leaf Gilding
There are several leaf gilding techniques, each of which is chosen according to the material and the desired effect. Some of the most common include:
- Gouache gilding: This is the traditional technique, used on surfaces prepared with a layer of bolus and animal glue, often rabbit glue. It is particularly used for gilding statues, frames and other artistic works.
- Mission gilding: This method involves the use of a special adhesive, called a "mission," to which gold leaf is then applied. Unlike gouache gilding, this technique is faster and frequently used for furniture or large area decorations.
The Use of Gold Leaf Gilding Today
Today, gold leaf gilding continues to be widely used in both art and luxury furniture. In particular, this technique is crucial in the restoration of antique objects, such as furniture, frames, and sculptures, where the gold helps to enhance the original beauty of the piece. In addition, gold leaf gilding is still used in contemporary architecture and design, providing a touch of luxury and elegance to modern interiors, such as luxury hotels and exclusive residences.
