Unbelievable original antique French Empire 41" diameter gueridon, center hall, breakfast table, or the perfect spot for games such as chess or backgammon. This spectacular table constructed of solid wood, has three stylish fish-form bracketed feet and one of the most beautiful stone tops I have seen in quite sometime. Speaking of that stone top, with its unique decorative edge, which functions as a lip to help keep liquids from running off the top onto the fine carpets or flooring beneath. Classic style and design mixed with old-world craftsmanship give this special table more character than any one table could ever need. An exciting find, don't miss this extraordinary table!! Empire is an early 19th century style of architecture and furniture design during the rule of France by Napoleon I (1769 - 1821) who became Emperor (1804 - 1814). The Empire style was based on aspects of the Roman Empire. It is the second phase of neoclassicism which is also called "Directoire", after a government system. Furniture typically had symbols and ornaments borrowed from glorious ancient Greek and Roman empires. Most Empire furniture was made from heavy woods such as mahogany and ebony, imported from the colonies, with dark finishes often with decorative bronze mounts. Marble tops were popular as were Egyptian motifs like sphinxes, griffins, fishes and urns and the Napoleonic symbols, the eagle, the bee, the initials "I" and a large "N." Gilded metal (ormolu) details and decorations displayed a high level of craftsmanship. When most of these antique hall tables arrive from France, they are in desperate need of some good old-fashioned tender loving care. They rarely sit level, are usually missing something important, and require a somewhat major overhaul. My craftsmen take each one of these tables from a state of ill repair to something of a treasured family heirloom, a quality antique.
