About the Item

This vintage center table has a round faux marble top and three carved poplar legs in the form of dolphins. The piece is a casual interpretation of a design that dates back to the Baroque period and earlier. The surface shows considerable wear and discoloration due to exposure to water. Given its whimsical nature, it may have found use in an orangerie or loggia. It is physically robust and could be left exactly as-is or restored for a more polite and polished appearance. The gold leaf on the dolphin heads is naturally rubbed and burnished by use. The piece is ideal in a large entry or great room and its casualness allows it to blend in contemporary or antique-filled spaces.

A Round Art Deco Dining Table in Macassar Ebony
Located in Chicago, IL
This stunning circular dining table is resplendent in macassar veneer arranged in a starburst pattern. The design consists of 8 pie-shaped wedges formed from 32 pieces of veneer. Macassar, a subspecies of ebony, was selected for its straight grain, high striation, and exceptional hardness. The base is pyramidal, with three tapered legs joined by curved lobes. The piece is truly a marvel of nature and human craftsmanship. The high-gloss lacquer finish accentuates the beauty of the wood. Hungarian furniture makers have been making fine veneered furniture since the Biedermeier era in the early 19th Century. Biedermeier furniture required high-tech (for the time) cutting tools and new application techniques. The technology transferred easily to Art Deco, a style that originated in France but also bloomed in 1930's Budapest. The same techniques are in use today, almost 100 years later. Hungarian Deco...
