About the Item

Louis XV Style Carved Walnut Center Table — From the Iris Apfel Collection France, circa 1880–1900 Likely produced by a provincial or Parisian atelier in the manner of Maison Krieger Dimensions: 30.75" H × 40.5" L × 32" D A richly carved French Louis XV-style walnut center table, the shaped rectangular top above a pierced apron carved in low relief with floral garlands, trellis panels, and a central oval cartouche surrounded by scrolling acanthus volutes. Raised on cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet, each leg carved with foliate motifs continuing the exuberant Rococo theme. The table’s refined yet lively carving and construction details—solid walnut, dowel-joined top, and fluid hand-carved ornament—suggest origin from a late-19th-century Parisian or Lyonnais workshop, working in the manner of Maison Krieger, celebrated for their Louis XV revival furniture during the Belle Époque. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection Condition: Good condition overall. Minor surface scratches, nicks, and scuffs; light finish distress; tabletop loosely attached with original dowels. Solid, stable, and presents beautifully. About Iris Apfel: Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was an American design icon whose extraordinary sense of style bridged the worlds of fashion, interiors, and decorative arts. As co-founder of Old World Weavers, she and her husband Carl were celebrated for their restoration work on historic residences and the White House under nine presidents. Known for her maximalist vision and bold juxtaposition of texture and history, Apfel’s furnishings and art collections have become emblematic of her sophisticated yet playful approach to design. This table, from her personal collection, captures the rich ornament and individuality that defined her aesthetic world.
