About the Item
This coffee table designed by Michel Dumas in 1970 exemplifies French modernist design at the intersection of industrial materials and refined proportions. The composition combines a smoked glass top with sculptural plexiglass bases and metal connectors, creating a visually light yet architecturally grounded presence.
The transparency and warm brown tones of the plexiglass contrast with the darker glass surface, allowing light to pass through the structure while emphasizing the table’s geometric rhythm. The low, elongated format reflects the design sensibilities of the early 1970s, when experimentation with synthetic materials and modular construction became central to contemporary furniture design.
Both functional and sculptural, this table works equally well as a central coffee table or as a statement piece within a modern or post-modern interior.

Michel Dumas
Michel Dumas was a French painter from Lyons. He was a pupil of Grobon and Bonnefond at the National School Fine Arts De Lyon. He later moved to Paris, where he entered the workshop of Ingres, with whom he established a lifelong friendship. Through the income from private commissions, he left for Rome, where he stayed, with Ingres, for 16 years. Dumas ended his career in his hometown as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and died in 1885.MICHEL DUMAS (FRANCE, 1812–85)
