About the Item
Tray table , England second half of the 19th century. Made of finely chiseled and gilded bronze with papier maché top. Four uprights in the form of a winged dragon with goat's foot, joined together by cross with pinnacle support an embellished top but gilded bronze applications in rocaille taste. The tray is signed "Jennet
Bettridge London" surmounted by a crown. It is one of the most important manufacturers of furniture and objects made of papier maché, a company that exhibited in the most important unicersal exhibitions of the 19th century. On the cover of the book "japanned papier maché and tinware" is a drawing from the 1851 World's Fair, depicting Jennens
Bettridge's booth itself.
