About the Item

A striking example of early tribal furniture from Nagaland in northeast India, this low bed or platform was hand-carved from a single solid block of hardwood, with integral legs and top formed from the same piece. Dating to the 17th–18th century, it exemplifies the austere elegance and strength of Naga carving traditions. Used historically as a personal resting platform or communal seat within Naga households or morungs (men’s houses), the bed reflects the region’s emphasis on functional simplicity and the natural character of the material. The slightly uneven surface retains adze marks, rounded corners, and a deeply burnished patina built over centuries of use. A rare early Naga bed, circa 1700s, carved from a single block of dense hardwood. Its sculptural low form, adze-hewn surface, and deep patina embody the timeless craftsmanship of Nagaland’s tribal culture. Rare survivals of this age and integrity illustrate the artistry of Naga craftsmanship long before outside influence reached the region. Its organic geometry and timeless form make it equally suited as a sculptural bench or coffee table in a modern interior.
