About the Item
Vintage 1960s Aluminium and Glass Coffee ‘Propeller’ Table by Knut Hesterberg for Ronald Schmitt with the original thick glass 110cm diameter top.
This eye catching Mid Century Modern glass and Aluminium base coffee table was designed by Knut Hesterberg in the 60s and produced by Ronald Schmitt in Germany. It’s a true icon of 20th Century design and has become known as the ‘Propeller’ table because it features a sculptural aluminium propeller shaped base; which also echoes the classic ‘Ying, Yang’ motif.
The base is constructed from a single piece and pressed out of a thick sheet of aluminium before being carefully folded into shape. You’ll find them with different size tops as many have been replaced over the years – but the preferred size, as originally specified by Hesterberg himself, featured a 20mm thick, 110cm diameter top which was the perfect proportion for the base. So if you want a truly original table, then that’s the size you’re after!
Knut Hesterberg was a world-famous German artist and sculptor who started his career at a graphic art and design studio in Zurich, Switzerland, where he came into contact with the architect and artist Max Bill, who had a great influence on his future work. He has exhibited his sculptures all-over Europe, and many of his large-scale sculptures are permanently installed in public spaces throughout Germany and a few in Italy. He started designing furniture in the 60s and whilst he created a number of concepts the Propeller table remains as his most famous and recognizable design.
The table is in good vintage condition with some light marks to the top, the edge and the base commensurate with age and use.

Vintage Italian Tri-symmetric Cherry wood side table
Located in Highclere, Newbury
Unusual vintage Italian Tri-symmetric Cherry and Satinwood side table.
This is a wonderful little decorative side table created in the same style as Tri-symmetric occasional tables with 3 angular and equally opposed legs. It has a Cherry wood top supported on a Satinwood base that features beautiful figuring in the wood. The fine wishbone legs having a soft and contoured rounding to the fore of each angle and with radial veneers to the top that display a high level of craftsmanship.
It’s by an unknown designer and maker but is clearly a quality item as Satinwood was only ever used as accents on expensive furniture...
