About the Item

This is an antique Spanish coffee table, crafted in the late 18th to early 19th century (circa 1780–1820) and originating from the northern inland regions of Spain. The piece belongs to the traditional Castilian rural furniture style, recognizable by its hand-hewn construction, deep carvings, and warm, time-worn character. The top is made from a single wide plank of solid chestnut, with a thickness of 2.5 cm (about 1 inch). Chestnut was commonly used in this region due to its stability, durability, and attractive grain. The table shows a rich and honest surface with scratches, dents, and marks of use, bearing witness to centuries of daily life. The wood grain is beautifully visible, displaying a warm medium-brown color, a deep natural sheen, and a rich patina that only develops through long-term aging. At the front, the table features two drawers with fine geometric carving, a decorative motif typical of Spanish rural furniture from this period. The drawers retain their original wooden knobs, an increasingly rare and highly desirable detail that strengthens the table’s authenticity. The base is decorated with carved details on the legs and stretchers, including the characteristic series of half-round cut-outs along the lower rail — a feature commonly found in Castilian pieces of the 18th and early 19th century. This coffee table is an excellent example of traditional Spanish craftsmanship in solid chestnut, with a robust, honest presence and a patina that reflects more than two centuries of history.
