About the Item

This rare square coffee table was crafted in France around 1880. The piece is made of ebonized walnut: the top is finely veneered in walnut, while the frame and legs are executed in solid walnut. The deep black finish enhances the strong architectural character of the table and lends it a timeless elegance. The octagonal, profiled legs clearly reveal Oriental influences. During the second half of the 19th century, Europe – and especially France – developed a fascination with Eastern art and architecture. Inspired by international exhibitions and the expansion of global trade, French cabinetmakers began to incorporate exotic motifs and forms into their designs, blending them with their own highly refined traditions. This table is a striking example of that stylistic fusion. Originally, such a low table would have been placed in a salon or reception room. Its large square top offered space for decorative objects such as fine porcelain, bronzes, or books, while also serving a social function – holding tea or coffee services, games, or being the focal point of gatherings. With its sturdy construction and elegant detailing, the table was both functional and representative of refined taste. The table has been carefully cleaned and treated in our workshop with a fresh wax finish, bringing back the depth and natural luster of the wood. It is in excellent, solid condition, without damage, and ready for immediate use. This coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture – it is a rare testament to late 19th-century French craftsmanship, where Oriental inspiration, refined proportions, and the rich presence of ebonized walnut come together in a unique and timeless design.
