About the Item

Presenting a mesmerizing free-form coffee table crafted by California artisan Craig Lauterbach, signed and dated 1980. This unique piece embodies the American Studio Craft movement, showcasing Lauterbach's signature style of organic, curvaceous forms that seamlessly blend function with decorative allure. Hand-carved from solid wood and stack-laminated into a seductive shape, this table is a testament to Lauterbach's craftsmanship and technical skill. The whimsical design features an intricate network of circular openings, highlighting its artistic complexity and visual appeal. Topped with inset glass, the table enhances its organic charm while maintaining an all-wood construction. Through correspondence with Craig Lauterbach, he confirmed that only approximately 25 of this design was made by himself, from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. A similar example sold at LAMA in 2007 for $11,700. This California Craftsman freeform cocktail table by Craig Lauterbach would work great in a California Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Post-Modern, Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. MEASUREMENTS: H 15.5" x W 49.25" x D 25.5" CONDITION: Glass is slightly raised on one side which causes a very slight wobble (to the glass) when pressure is applied. New glass can be made and the slight wobble can be corrected. Some slight lacquer loss in areas directly underneath the glass where the glass sits and touches the table. Some minor scratches. Overall very attractive and ready for immediate use.

Sultana Sculptural Dining Table by George Mulhauser for Plycraft, 1960s
By Plycraft, George Mulhauser
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A sculptural and highly collectible example of the 'Sultana' dining table designed by George Mulhauser and produced by Plycraft in the 1960s. Part of an iconic line that included tables, seating and coordinating pieces, this table exemplifies Mulhauser’s ability to marry structural ingenuity with decorative flair. The design is anchored by a sweeping, scroll-formed wood base refinished in a dark brown stain, its looping curves radiating outward to create a visually dynamic silhouette that remains remarkably elegant. Resting atop this sculptural support is a 48" round glass top (but different size tops can be made upon request), which displays the base like a piece of modern art while providing generous surface area for dining or entertaining. Part of Plycraft’s signature Sultana line is a suite that also included armchairs and side chairs, this table reflects the best of mid-century American modernism with a Hollywood Regency sensibility. Its balanced proportions, bold yet refined detailing, and high-quality materials make it an exceptional focal point for both classic and contemporary interiors. Ideal for collectors, interior designers and decorators, and discerning clients seeking a centerpiece dining table that is both functional and a work of art, this Mulhauser Sultana...
