About the Item
During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that harnessed warmth from the kitchen fire. Used while seated atop the kang, low tables and cabinets such as this provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.
Accentuated by a dark lacquer finish, this 19th-century kang chest is streamlined and minimal, designed with clean lines and little ornamentation. Ideal today as a coffee table or media console, the low cabinet has six drawers for ample storage and a soft, timeworn patina.
