About the Item

René Broissand (1928–2019) Wood Walkers and Reeds, circa 1970–1975 Sculptural coffee table in brass and gunmetal patinated metal Monogrammed and dated (19)75 Dimensions: H. 43.5 cm – W. 140 cm – D. 100 cm Oval translucent glass top (added later) Biographical Information Designer, architect, and theorist, Eugène Gaillard is one of the founding figures of French Art Nouveau. A close collaborator of Siegfried Bing, he contributed to the Bing Art Nouveau Pavilion at the 1900 Exposition, where his furniture was distinguished by its flowing forms, sculpted plant motifs, and pursuit of total artistic unity. His work, combining technical mastery and naturalistic refinement, marks an essential step in the evolution of decorative arts at the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Tunisia in 1926 to French parents, he spent his entire childhood there. As a teenager, he left his homeland to go to sea aboard a cargo ship. He spent most of his youth there, learning the demanding trade of welding and absorbing the diverse places and landscapes he encountered. In the 1950s, he worked at the Ministry of the Navy in Paris. He left his position to dedicate himself to the material he had come to love: metal, and particularly stainless steel. In the late 1950s, he met many artists who were working with this material, preferring it to others for its malleability and near-indestructible strength. Determined to explore the limits of steel in an artistic dimension, René Broissand never stopped creating. He participated in his first exhibitions in Paris starting in 1963, alongside metal artists such as César, Hiquilly, Guzman, and Albert Féraud. From Basel to New York, he held a string of exhibitions over some twenty years. His career was built on the close relationships he cultivated with numerous wealthy individuals and prominent figures. Appreciated for his sculpture and furniture, his extensive international network, encompassing the worlds of television, film, and politics, led him to receive significant commissions. His polished bronze lighting fixtures, steel tables, and chairs, initially exhibited at the Galerie Saint Angelo, were acquired by the Rothschild Foundation in 1976. In 1977, the designer created several sculptures and a set of tables for Pierre Cardin, combining steel and ceramic, materials he handled with equal passion. His sculpture is characterized by a recurring theme: the bird, a symbol of the freedom he constantly sought. In contrast, his furniture, imbued with the same strength and eclecticism, offers a fresh perspective on modernity. Totem-like seats resulting from rigorous geometric research, a bench with a backrest punctuated by the creaking of steel—each piece by René Broissand is unique and, with its own distinct strength, embodies the union of art and design. It is in Annecy that, since 1970, a large part of his works and commissions have been created; all around the lake, his pieces can be seen emerging from the water with dynamism and poetry. There, he met Bernard Accoyer, then President of the National Assembly. With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Accoyer made him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2009. Throughout his illustrious career, René Broissand has never ceased to create and imagine, with a sure and spontaneous hand, living pieces composed of a material considered inert.

Antique Eagle Mosaic table coffee
Located in NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, FR
Antique Eagle...
