About the Item

This impressive Norwegian table is defined by its materials, seamless joinery and distinctive, but soft ornamentation of the tabletop. Designed by Erling Viksjø, one of Norway’s most influential architects from the mid-20th century, this table is characteristic of the postwar exploration with both natural and man-made materials. Utilising and highlighting the qualities of the materials used, combined with the expertise of Erling Viksjø, this coffee table is a beautiful piece that can both dominate and complement a modern space. The table's rectangular top showcases an appealing textural and colourful look. As a result, the impression is quite elemental and striking. Viksjø often worked with concrete that had interesting rock patterns, which soon became his trademark. He also created new materials and ways of building, resulting in concrete types he named Naturbetong (natural concrete), conglo concrete, and metal concrete. This type of material creates a stunning contrast which is what makes this table stand out. The warm tone of the wooden base also creates a sense of elegance and sophistication, while the modern stone top is smooth to the touch, adding a sense of solidity and durability to the overall design. Norwegian designers of this era aimed to create furniture and home decor that was both aesthetically pleasing and practical. This style has become synonymous with Scandinavian and Nordic design and is still sought after today for its timeless appeal and quality. This coffee table follows the fundamental Scandinavian design principles both aesthetically and technically. The simple design serves the purpose of showing the understated beauty of the materials and their endless possibilities under the hands of an expert craftsman. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The table has recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature of the materials, the item may have some marks, scratches, and discolouration. "Condor" Coffee Table by Fredrik Schriever Abeln for Örebro Glas, Sweden, 1960s
By Fredrik Schriever-Abeln, Örebro Glasfabrik
Located in Utrecht, NL
Swedish designer, Fredrik Schriever-Abeln’s designs have become quite sought after only in the past years. This is in part due to the beloved design of this “Condor” table being misattributed to Illum Wikkelsø until recently. The distinctive “X” shaped teak base defines this coffee table holding a glass top. The solid wood base is sculpted to perfection, the level of woodwork and precise joinery technique greatly shows off the skills of the craftsman. The structure is made with minimal joinery, the glass top is held solely by the carved “arms”, while the stretcher is joined to the legs with mortise and tenon joints. The balance of the size of the glass top and wooden parts praise the designer’s vision. The modern aesthetic shows that this table - like the Condor chairs...

Carl Malmsten "Samsas" Coffee Table for Åfors Möbelfabrik AB, Sweden, 1960s
By Carl Malmsten
Located in Utrecht, NL
“All edges must be thoroughly broken”, Carl Malmsten often wrote in his drawings. It was nature that was his great source of inspiration and in nature there are hardly any sharp edges or corners. This “Samsas” table is one of the greatest examples of this sentiment. This elegant table was designed as part of the 'Samsas' series of seating models and this rare table. Neither the light, the eye nor the person likes to turn against sharp corners, Malmsten explained once. Therefore, edges should be rounded so that they become friendlier to touch and look at. Carl Malmsten was not only one of Sweden's most famous furniture designers, he was also one of the last century's great cultural personalities with a strong influence on the home environment, public environment and the contemporary public debate. His personality shines through the design of this round coffee table as well. The design is dominated by the round tabletop with a spectacular sunburst pattern. The sunburst design or figure was commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns; it consists of rays or "beams" radiating out from a central point in the manner of sunbeams. To support the top are four straight legs with impeccable joinery that is visible under the tabletop. Since this table was made in the heyday of the mid-century, the legs, and the design as a whole lacks heavy ornamentation and instead focuses on the natural beauty of wood and the rounded edges. Carl Malmsten’s design was materialized by Swedish manufacturer, Åfors Möbelfabrik AB...
