About the Item
Designed by the incomparable Adrian Pearsall, this sculptural coffee table is the epitome of American Mid-Century Modern Design. In excellent original, vintage condition this iconic coffee table, cut from slabs of solid black American walnut and topped with a thick-cut glass top, is a collector's dream. Replete with stunning variegated woodgrains unique to the American walnut species this coffee table is currently available with the original accompanying four "Trifecta" rolling stools that cozy up under the glass top.
Born in 1925 Adrian Pearsall began designing and building furniture in 1952 with his company named 'Craft Associates' which started first in his home shop and grew to a company with more than 650 craftsmen and employees. Pearsall’s work not only helped define Mid-Century Modern but also the idea that function does not have to be sacrificed for beauty.
With most furniture before the mid-century being highly ornate and lacking in utilitarian use, his work was a much welcomed change. Clean lines, organic shapes, and black American walnut wood are just a few elements often found in Pearsall’s furniture and all are on display with this magnificent sculptural coffee table.
In rare, excellent original condition this coffee table is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic Adrian Pearsall table that is ready for a literal lifetime more of use and can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Minimalism to Contemporary and everything in between. This sculptural coffee table by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates is in 100% original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection! The solid black walnut composition is in remarkably good shape showing some scratches and nicks (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos and natural light video provided) but showing no cracks, stains or other wear whatsoever and woodgrains of the walnut are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light.
The thick-cut glass top does show some signs of wear such as three minor chips (shown in the detail photos provided) as well as numerous surface scratches (again shown in the detail photos provided), but showing no cracks or other damage. Adrian Pearsall
Adrian Pearsall designed some of the most exuberant and expressive American chairs, sofas and other furniture of the 1950s and ’60s. For verve and vivacity of form, he surpasses even Vladimir Kagan — whose work is the emblem of swinging, sexy mid-20th century modernism. Pearsall gave his imagination free rein, and his flamboyant, eye-catching styles are icons of what has become known as “Atomic Age” design.
Pearsall studied architectural engineering at the University of Illinois before opening his Pennsylvania furniture company, Craft Associates, in 1952, and that training shows in many designs.
A Pearsall trademark, for example, is a lounge chair with an exceptionally tall, trapezoidal back, which give the pieces a skyscraper-like silhouette. Pearsall also had a talent for so-called Gondola sofas — long, low-slung pieces with upswept ends. Many of Pearsall’s sofas and chairs are supported not by legs, but on gently arced walnut skids.
Pearsall had a gift for tables, too, in particular glass-topped side tables and coffee tables with frames that have the look of an Alexander Calder stabile. As you will see from the offerings on 1stDibs, Pearsall had flair, and his work adds an attention-getting, sculptural exclamation point to any décor.
