About the Item
Beautiful coffee table or side table made by Maison Jansen around the 1970s, decorated with a striking map. This coffee table has a simple structure made of wood, with straight lines and a square profile. The glass top has an antiqued gold brass frame that protects it and connects it to the structure and its covering a map print. This is a coffee table that follows the country style, so characteristic of British colonial art and adopted on many occasions by the Maison Jansen house.
The map is titled “A new and correct map of the world down AC. Cording to the newest discoveries and form the most exact observations, by Herman Moll geographer.” This is a map made by Herman Moll in the 18th century, belonging to a collection of around thirty maps. These maps are distinguished by their elaborate cartouche and images. As with many of his works, Moll used these maps to promote and support British policy and regional rights throughout the world: he called the Atlantic Ocean the “Sea of the British Empire”. A cartouche in the lower area reads: “To is most sacred majesty George, by the Grace of God king of Great Britain France
Ireland defender of the faith”.
It is, therefore, a table of extraordinary quality and finish, which can be used as a games table, as a coffee table or as a side table for any corner.
The prestigious Parisian brand Maison Jansen is one of the great interior design firms. It was founded by Jean-Henri Jansen in 1880, a Dutchman living in Paris, and soon established itself in a premises just a few metres from the Bastille. He was particularly noted for his restoration and cabinetmaking work, with the best craftsmen of his time. From the beginning, his intention was to combine traditional furniture with influences from new trends, including the Anglo-Japanese style, Chinoiserie, the Arts and Crafts movement and the Turkish style. He grew, opening workshops and shops all over the world, and decorated the homes of personalities such as the Kennedys, the Dukes of Windsor and Coco Chanel.

Midcentury Ivory Jean-Claude Mahey Dining Table France lacquered wood brass
By Jean Claude Mahey
Located in Valladolid, ES
One of a kind and exquisite table clearly embodies the spirit of high-end French design from the 1970s and 1980s, characteristic of Jean-Claude Mahey. Its precise geometry and lacquer finish evoke an aesthetic that fuses Art Deco, reinterpreted with modern glamour.
The octagonal shape of the tabletop is particularly striking. This formal choice breaks with rectangular or circular tradition, providing dynamism and sophistication. The golden brass lines, which divide the surface into triangular planes, reinforce the compositional structure and allude to a sense of almost architectural order. These golden lines function not only as decorative accents but also as visual guides that direct the eye toward the center, generating visual balance. Jean Claude Mahey often used this contrast between polished lacquer and shiny metals to highlight geometric shapes.
The ivory or cream lacquer finish provides a polished surface, typical of Mahey's style, which amplifies the sense of luxury and modernity. This type of finish is often associated with Hollywood-inspired interior design and the refined opulence of the mid-20th century.
The square-sectioned, also lacquered base presents itself as a solid, geometric volume, generating an elegant tension between the visual mass of the base and the lightness of the tabletop. The gilded metal profiles that frame the edges of the base reinforce the idea of geometric luxury and add stylistic continuity with the design of the tabletop. The table is extendable. Its basic shape is square, but the two extensions (which fold in half) are hidden within the base and fit into rails that are concealed beneath the tabletop.
Overall, this table is a paradigmatic example of Jean Claude Mahey's style: refined, geometric, glamorous, and deeply linked to an artistic vision of furniture as functional sculpture.
