About the Item
A rare wrought iron coffee table with a nested stone top by Gilbert Poillerat, circa 1940. The wrought iron base has beautifully over accentuated scrolling legs and a tapering that adds a marvelous attenuation to them. The I was involving someone shaped stretcher with twisted it's twisted bars and graceful curves pause the piece to have a lightness and yet an extreme tension. Also this table retains it's original patina. It is a showstopper and a real collector's item.
Gilbert Poillerat is heralded as one of the leading masters of ironwork during his time. After graduating from Ecole Bulle in 1921, he went to work for master of the craft, Edgar Brandt. During his career he collaborated with designers such as Jean Royere, Andre Arbus, and Jaques Adnet. By the late 1930s, he had established himself as one of the most skilled ironworkers of his generation. His designs are highly distinctive and were most often produced, as is the case here, in single editions.
Gilbert Poillerat, decorator and blacksmith, was born on the border between Beauce and Sologne. After the Boulle school, from which he graduated in 1921, and eight years spent at Brandt as a young man, he was ranked first among ironworkers. However, it was only after devoting himself to chiselling and painting that he developed a passion for this art. Ask him which style he prefers in ornamental ironwork, and he will answer: "The 17th century, because that was the period that brought the most beautiful works of ironwork to life. A simple balcony, a banister of staircase bore the mark of the elegance and the French spirit".
